Acer Aspire V3-771G-6485 17.3-Inch Laptop Review

Acer Aspire V3-771G-6485 17.3-Inch Laptop

The Acer Aspire V3-771G-6485 17.3-Inch Laptop is an upper mid-range machine built to cope with the demands of both work and entertainment on the move. Its stylish, glossy, Midnight Black design is equally at home either in the boardroom or the living room, reflecting its multi-purpose role.

Of course, looks aren’t everything – if the machine’s performance doesn’t match its appearance, it is unlikely to become a best seller! Fortunately, the V3-771G-6485 more than fulfils its promise.

It is driven by a third generation Intel Core i5-3230M dual-core processor running at 2.6GHz, although, thanks to Intel’s Turbo Boost technology, it is capable of automatically adjusting its speed, as needed, up to a maximum of 3.2GHz to cope with more challenging workloads. It also supports Hyperthreading, which allows each core to execute up to two threads simultaneous, ensuring that the processor is always being used as efficiently as possible. This CPU is designed for use in laptops, where it is important to strike a balance between power consumption and performance, and is a good choice of a laptop in this price / performance range.

The machine is equipped with 6GB of DDR3 memory, which should be more than enough to allow the supplied copy of Windows 8 to run well. Multi-tasking your favourite applications, and switching between them as needed, should present no difficulties, whether you’re writing reports, updating your social status or video chatting with your friends and family via the built-in 1.3MP HD webcam.

Permanent storage is provided by a 750GB, 5400RPM SATA hard drive. Again, this should be more than adequate for most purposes, allowing the user to store a fairly impressive number of documents, pictures, music and movies. However, if even more storage space is required, it should be a relatively easy matter to arrange, as this laptop has support for dual hard drives.

Pros :

  • Powerful mid-range laptop
  • Intel Core i5-3230M 2.6 GHz Processor
  • Large 750GB Hard Disk
  • 6GB RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 730M graphics card with 4GB of dedicated DDR3 VRAM
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • Heavier than some laptops
  • Battery live may be limiting

The machine’s 17.3″, HD+, Widescreen (1600 x 900 pixel, 16:9 aspect ratio) CineCrystal, LED-backlit display is driven by an NVIDIA GeForce GT 730M mobile graphics card with 4GB of dedicated DDR3 VRAM. This relatively powerful, mid-range component is DirectX 11.1 compatible and offers a good balance between performance and power consumption. It should have no difficulty with routine computing tasks or HD video and should be able to handle a range of modern games on at least medium settings, and perhaps, depending on the game, at considerably higher settings than that.

The built-in 8X Super Multi Double-Layer DVD Drive makes it very easy to install software from CD or DVD, backup your data or watch movies direct from the original disk. Although the machine’s 17.3″ HD display should be more than adequate for watching movies, there are time when you really, really want to enjoy your favourite flicks on a much bigger screen. Fortunately, the V3-771G-6485 offers an HDMI port for connecting to external monitors or HDTVs, and a VGA port for connecting to older monitors, projectors etc.

Other connectivity options include on high speed USB 3.0 port and two standard USB 2.0 ports for attaching wired peripherals, while Bluetooth 4.0+ HS allows you to connect to wireless headsets, mice, cellphones and other devices. Network access is provided via a Gigabit Ethernet port for wired networking, or 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, ensuring that you can get online whenever you need to.

The built-in 1.3PM HD webcam makes this machine video-chat capable right out of the box – no need to install any extra hardware of software, just sing in to your favourite chat program (Windows 8 ships with Skype) and you’re good to go. This kind of convenience is reflected in other design features, too; the full-sized keyboard includes a 10 key numeric keypad (a great help if you regularly input large amounts of numeric data) and a muli-gesture touchpad that works well with the new touch-centric features of Windows 8, while the multi-in-1 card reader eases the process of transferring images to the laptop from your camera or cellphone.

The machine measure 16.33 x 10.83 x 1.36 inches (L x W x H) and weighs 7.05 lbs – certainly not the smallest or lightest laptop on the market, but, equally, not big or heavy enough to be difficult to carry around. Its 6-cell Li-ion battery promises a battery life of up to 4 hours, which should be fine for taking around your home or office, but may be a little problematic if you plan to use the machine for long periods away from the power grid.

Overall, this is an impressively specified machine that should be able to handle all of your day-to-day computing needs with ease, and has enough capacity in reserve to keep you entertained when your working day is done. It obviously isn’t going to be a match for a dedicated gaming machine, but if you’re looking for a relatively powerful general purpose laptop that can handle a little gaming on top of your regular workload, this may well be the machine for you.
