Acer Aspire V5-171-6675 11.6-Inch Laptop

The Acer Aspire V5-171-6675 11.6-Inch Laptop is a fantastic choice for anyone seeking a reasonably powerful, extremely portable laptop.

Powered by a second generation Intel Core  i3-2377M Processor running at 1.5GHz, and supported by 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive, this machine is definitely not going to struggle with your everyday computing needs.

Whether surfing the web, video chatting via the built-in 1.3MP HD Webcam, tackling your homework assignments or working on the move, it has the processing power and storage capacity to get the job done.

As you would expect from a design that emphasises mobile productivity, the machine offers the usual array of ports and connectivity options. Bluetooth 4.0+HS, a high-speed USB 3.0 port and two legacy USB 2.0 ports make it easy to connect external peripherals, an HDMI port allows you to connect to an HDTV, a 2-in-1 card reader simplifies the transfer of images from memory cards, and both a gigabit Ethernet port and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi mean that internet connectivity shouldn’t be a problem.

The 11.6″ HD Widescreen CineCrystal LED backlit display is driven by Intel HD Graphics 3000 with 128MB of dedicated system memory. This combination is more than adequate for day-to-day productivity, and is easily able to handle HD video for entertainment on the move, but it will struggle with today’s most demanding games.

In fairness, however, this is not, and does not claim to be, a games machine. It is an easily portable workhorse laptop, and in this respect it succeeds brilliantly. Measuring 11.22 (L) x 7.95 (D) x 1.09 (H) inches and weighing just over 3 pounds, this laptop is easy to carry around with you, and its smooth, elegant surface makes it easy to hold as you work on the move. This is important as, with a battery life of up to five ours, you may find yourself working away from a power point for longer than you had anticipated.

Pros :

  • Small, powerful, lightweight everyday workhorse
  • Large Hard Disk
  • Windows 8
  • Stylish design

Cons :

  • No optical drive
  • No VGA port

In order to achieve so much in such a small space, however, some compromises have had to be made. One is the loss of a CD / DVD optical drive – if you think you’re likely to need one, you should purchase an external USB unit, or consider a different laptop. Another is the lack of VGA port. Although there is an HDMI port for connecting the machine to a modern monitor or HDTV, there is no port for older VGA monitors or projectors.  Whether this is a problem for you depends on what you intend to do with the laptop, but it’s something to be aware of.

The Acer Aspire V5-171-6675 ships with Windows 8, the latest version of Microsoft’s ubiquitous operating system. Redesigned to offer a more streamlined, user-focussed experience, the new Windows 8 interface may initially be a little confusing for long-time Windows users, but they will quickly get to grips with the new way of working.

Overall, this laptop is well worth considering if portability is an important part of your computing needs. Lightweight yet powerful, running the latest version of Windows and equipped to connect to most types of peripherals, it’s ideal for the mobile professional.
