A third generation Intel Core i7-3517U processor running at 1.9GHz (up to 3.0GHz with Turbo Boost Technology) is the driving force behind this machine. This CPU is commonly used in high-end laptops, and offers an excellent balance between performance and power consumption.

Supported by 8GB of DDR3 RAM, the CPU should have no difficulty in running the supplied copy of Windows 8, the latest version of Microsoft’s famous operating system, and multitasking several applications too.

The machine is supplied with a 500GB conventional hard drive. Although not nearly as fast as the solid state drives found in some modern laptops, nor as large as some of the hard drives found in other machines, it should, nonetheless, be both big enough and fast enough for most purposes. And, should you eventually need more speed, or space, it is a relatively easy task to replace the drive with a bigger, or faster alternative.

The 11.6″, HD, Widescreen CineCrystal, LED-backlit display has a resolution of 1366 x 768 and a 16:9 aspect ratio. It is driven by Intel HD Graphics 4000, with 128MB of dedicated system memory, which is easily able to cope with the demands of day-to-day computing. Graphics 4000 is also capable of handling HD video without difficulty, and shouldn’t struggle with casual gaming, either. More sophisticated gaming is, however, beyond its abilities, so if you’re specifically looking for a gaming laptop this machine is probably not for you.

Pros :

  • Small, lightweight, powerful
  • Plenty of RAM
  • Large Hard Disk
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • No optical drive
  • Graphics inadequate for serious gaming

For its target buyers, however, this machine has a lot to offer. As you would expect from a laptop designed to allow professionals to get work done on the move, it has a full range of connectivity options – a Gigabit Ethernet port for wired networking, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi for wireless networking and Bluetooth 4 +HS for connecting wireless mice, headsets and other devices.

For more conventional wired connections, there are two standard USB 2.0 ports, one high-speed USB 3.0 port and an HDMI port with HDCP support for connecting to an HDTV or monitor. There is also a legacy VGA port, in case you need to connect to an older monitor or projector, the usual microphone / headphone connection and a 2-in-1 card reader for transferring images from your memory cards to the computer. Finally, a built-in 1.3MP HD webcam with a maximum resolution of 1280 x 720 makes this machine video-chat capable right out of the box – just sign in to your favourite video chat software and you’re good to go!

Measuring 11.22 x 7.95 x 1.09 inches (L x W x H) and weighing just 3 lbs, this machine is both small and lightweight, despite its impressive capabilities. However, this tiny footprint has been achieved, in part, by omitting an optical drive from the machine – if you think you might need one, you’ll need to purchase an external USB DVD RW.

In reality, this is more something to be aware of than a serious problem, as the machine is clearly aimed at users who place a high value on extremely portable, yet powerful computing. For them, the Acer Aspire V5-171-9661 11.6-Inch Laptop (Silky Silver), with its battery life of up to 5 hours, its diminutive size and weight and undeniably potent performance is well worth considering.
