Acer Aspire V5-571P-6642 15.6-Inch Touch Screen Laptop Review

Acer Aspire V5-571P-6642 15.6-Inch Touch Screen Laptop

The Acer Aspire V5-571P-6642 laptop is an ideal machine for everyday home or business use, capable of tackling most tasks without difficulty.

Based on Intel’s Ivy Bridge technology, the Core i5 3317U CPU at the heart of this laptop runs at 1.7 GHz and features a 3MB cache. While nowhere near as powerful as Intel’s top of the range i7 CPUs, this part is still able to deliver a substantial amount of processing performance.

Of course, the CPU is just one of several elements that, together, make or break a computer’s performance – RAM, Hard Drive and graphics are, arguably, at least as important as the processor.

Taking each of these components in turn, the Aspire V5-571P-6642 sports a useful 6GB of DDR3 RAM. As a general rule, the more RAM a system has, the better, and the 6GB supplied with this laptop is an improvement on the 4GB (or even less!) found on many machines. It should be more than adequate for all but the most memory-hungry applications, but, as always, more would be even better!

The hard drive is a reasonably capacious 500GB (approximately half a Terabyte) SATA unit, which should be adequate for the fairly rapid storage and retrieval of an awful lot of documents and pictures, a substantial  amount of music etc. Its performance will not match that of the modern SSD units found in more expensive models, but, as with the RAM, it will be more than adequate for most purposes.

Pros :

  • Good All-rounder
  • Touch Screen
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • Graphics inadequate for serious gaming

Much the same can be said about the Intel HD Graphics 4000 that drives this laptop’s display – it is fine for most purposes. It will handle HD video with ease, and even makes a passable attempt at some of today’s more demanding games when played at their lowest video settings. However, for most serious gamers, this will be a long way from acceptable performance, and they will probably want to look elsewhere.

This laptop offers the usual range of modern features that you will find on all but the most basic models – WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4, 2 in 1 card reader, 8X DVD-Super Multi Double-Layer Drive, a 1.3MP HD Webcam, 2 USB 2.0 ports, 1 USB 3.0 port, and HDMI port with HDCP support and a 4-cell Lithium-Ion Battery (2500mAh) that promises up to 5 hours’ battery life.

All fairly standard stuff. What sets the Aspire V5-571P-6642 apart from many machines with similar capabilities is its 15.6″ widescreen 10 point multi-touch screen. This display enables you to take full advantage of the touch-friendly features of Windows 8, which is supplied with the laptop.

Overall, this is a capable mid-range machine that should cope easily with routine tasks, and has enough extra power to cope with slightly more demanding scenarios, too. The touch screen makes interacting with the latest features of Windows 8 a breeze, and while the HD 4000 graphics may make it unsuitable for ardent gamers, it should make an excellent purchase for home, student and business use.
