This device is an update to Acer’s original A1 tablet. Unlike it’s predecessor, which was driven by a processor derived from an ARM Cortex-A9, this tablet is powered by an Intel Atom Z2560 System on a Chip (SoC). The Z2560 integrates a dual core Atom processor that supports both Hyperthreading and Turbo Boost technologies. Hyperthreading enables each core to handle up to two threads in parallel, while Turbo Boost allows each core to automatically adjust its own speed, as needed, from the base speed of 933 MHz up to a maximum of 1.6 GHz. Together, these techniques ensure that the processor is making best use of available resources, conserving battery power where possible and delivering maximum performance when needed, making the Z2560 ideal for use in mid-range tablets like the Acer Iconia A1-830-1633.

The processor is supported by 1 GB of LPDDR2 memory. This should be enough to allow the installed copy of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean to perform reasonably well, although demanding applications may stutter a little under heavy usage. Of course, more memory is almost always better, but the 1 GB fitted in this tablet represents a sensible compromise between features and price, and shouldn’t have much impact on what most users will be using the device for, most of the time.

For permanent storage of music, pictures and, of course, apps, the device is fitted with 16 GB of Flash memory. Again, more memory is always better, but this should be enough to get you started, and may well be all that many casual users ever need. However, for those who do need more storage capacity, the Iconia A1-830-1633 features a MicroSD card slot that can accept cards of up to 32 GB – great if you need to carry loads of extra music or data around with you!

Pros :

  • Good mid-range tablet
  • 7.9-inch Display
  • Intel Dual-Core Atom Z2560 Processor (1.6 GHz, 1MB Cache)
  • 1 GB LPDDR2 Memory
  • 16 GB Flash Memory
  • 7.5-hour battery life
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

Cons :

  • Display resolution could be better but should be ok for routine tasks

Of course, as a touch screen device, the tablet’s display is arguably it’s most important – and certainly its most visible – component. The Iconia A1-830-1633 is fitted with a 7.9-inch, 1024 x 768 pixel, LED-backlit, LCD, capacitive 5-point touch screen with IPS technology and a viewing angle of up to 178 degrees. The screen’s 1024 x 768 resolution is, perhaps, a little disappointing compared to many tablets on the market, but, on the other hand, should be perfectly adequate for the kinds of tasks that most mid-range tablets are likely to be used for.

As you would expect from a mobile device, the tablet is equipped with 802.11 b/g/n WiFi for connecting to wireless networks, either at home, in the office or on the move. It also features Bluetooth 3.0, making it easy to connect to external headsets, keyboards and other Bluetooth-enabled devices. Built-in GPS ensures that the tablet is able to take advantage of apps that need to know your location, while a G-sensor keeps track of how you’re moving the device. Finally, a Micro USB 2.0 port makes wired connections simple and straightforward to handle.

The device has two cameras – front and rear facing. The rear facing 5 MP camera ought to be adequate for quick snaps, but probably isn’t going to produce many prize-winning images. The front-facing 2 MP camera should be fine for the occasional selfie, and, more importantly, for video chat sessions via Skype etc., but, again, probably won’t be generating many stunningly breathtaking shots.

Dual speakers mean that music and movies ought to sound better on this tablet than on competitors that feature only one speaker – an advantage if you intend to use this device for watching movies on the move! A 3.5 mm combo audio jack means that you can enjoy your music without disturbing the people around you, and a built-in microphone makes video-chat a breeze.

This tablet measures 7.99 x 5.45 x 0.32 inches, and weighs just 13.3 ounces – small and lightweight enough to take anywhere, yet big enough to be genuinely useful. And, with a reported battery life of up to 7.5 hours, you can be sure of getting plenty of use out of the device, whether sitting on your couch, commuting or travelling the world.

Overall, the Acer Iconia A1-830-1633 7.9-Inch Tablet (Silver) is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a reasonably capable mid-range Android tablet. The screen resolution is a little disappointing, but shouldn’t hamper most tasks. For an all-round, general purpose tablet for everyday tasks, this device is well worth considering.
