Alienware M18x R2 AM18XR2-7111BK 18-Inch Laptop

The Alienware M18x R2 AM18XR2-7111BK 18-Inch Laptop is a big, beautiful and above all powerful machine designed to meet the needs of hardcore gamers.

The Space Black anodized aluminium case features customisable internal lighting effects to suit your mood and the current state of game play – the lighting effects respond to in-game events – and creates a stunning impression.

But, as with most things, the beauty of this laptop is far more than skin deep. Tucked away inside lies the heart of the machine – a third generation Intel Core i7-3610QM processor, running at 2.3GHz (up to 3.3GHz with Turbo Boost). This is a powerful, yet energy efficient, CPU that should have no difficulty in meeting the gruelling demands of a high performance gaming laptop.

It is supported by 8GB of DDR3 RAM, which should be more than adequate for the supplied copy of Windows 8 to run well, while a 750GB hard drive provides enough space for most purposes. The machine also features a slot-load dual layer DVD RW for software installation and entertainment.

As you would expect from a premium product, there is no shortage of connectivity options – the sides of the laptop fairly bristle with ports including two legacy USB 2.0 ports, two high-speed USB 3.0 ports, one eSATA port, a 9-in-1 memory card reader and an ethernet port for wired networking. Wireless networking and Bluetooth are also available.

Pros :

  • Powerful, good-looking gaming laptop
  • Fast processor
  • Plenty of RAM
  • Large Hard Disk
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • Could be a little heavy and awkward to take on the move

The usual jacks support headphones and microphone, there is a VGA port for connecting to legacy monitors and projectors, and both input and output HDMI ports. The latter gives you the option to connect the machine to an HDTV or monitor, although the laptop’s own 18.4″ WideFHD (1920 x 1080) WLED display is fantastic in itself.

That screen is driven by NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M graphics, a DirectX 11.1 compatible component which offers an excellent balance between performance and power consumption. It isn’t quite top of the range, but it’s good enough to produce results  that most gamers will be pleased with. Equally importantly, sound is provided by Creative Sound Blaster Recon3Di with THX TruStudio Pro software.

Like the case, the AlienFX keyboard is backlit, and features TactX Macro keys to keep you at the top of your game.

The Alienware M18x R2 AM18XR2-7111BK is a big laptop, both in terms of its capabilities and its sheer size. It measures 23.23 x 9.25 x 4.63 inches (L) x (W) x (H) and weighs around 17 pounds – this is no feeble notebook, but a machine that offers all the features of a desktop rig in a sturdy case that takes up a fraction of the desktop’s space.

If you’ve been looking for a powerful, stylish desktop-replacement gaming laptop with impressive features and amazing looks, you may well have found it.
