Apple MacBook Pro ME665LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop with Retina Display Review

Apple MacBook Pro ME665LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop with Retina Display

The Apple MacBook Pro ME665LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop with Retina Display is a power-packed machine designed to meet the needs of those unwilling to compromise on either style or performance.

Its precision engineered aluminum unibody shell measures 14.13 x 9.73 x 0.71 inches (WxDxH), weighs just 4.46 pounds, and, it must be said, looks fantastic. The gently curving edges enhance the machine’s already slimline looks, making it seem almost impossibly thin.

Despite this, however, the shell is home to an impressively powerful array of components. The machine is driven by a quad core, third generation, Intel Core i7 processor, running at 2.7GHz, although, using Intel’s Turbo Boost technology, it is capable of automatically increasing that speed to a maximum of 3.7GHz as needed. The processor also uses Hyperthreading, enabling each of the four cores to work with up to two threads simultaneous for far more efficient performance.

The CPU is supported by two 8GB DDR3 RAM modules, giving the machine a generous total of 16GB ofRAM, and 512GB of flash storage for permanent storage and impressively rapid retrieval of your documents, pictures, music and movies. In fact, the ME665LL/A owes much of it’s impressive performance to this high speed alternative to a conventional hard disk; features such as instant on wouldn’t be possible without it.

Much of the publicity surrounding recent Apple products has focussed on their Retina displays, and quite rightly so. The 15.4-inch, LED-backlit Retina display features IPS technology and offers a native resolution of 2880-x-1800 at an impressive 220 pixels per inch. That equates to more than 5 million pixels, packed together so densley that the human eye is virtually incapable of viewing them individually. The end result is images and text that are far sharper than you would find on other, lesser displays.

The Retina display is driven by one of two different graphics processors, depending on circumstances. For routine tasks such as surfing the web and checking email, the M665LL/A makes use of the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 hardware. This is more than capable of handling everyday tasks, yet is reasonably frugal in terms of power consumption. For more demanding tasks, such as games or video editing, the machine seamlessly switches to a discrete, powerful, but much less energy-efficient NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M processor, complete with 1 GB of GDDR5 video memory. By combining processors in this way, the machine is able to offer the best of both worlds – impressively powerful graphics when you need them, and good power consumption when you don’t.

Pros :

  • Powerful, Stylish MacBook
  • 16GB RAM
  • 512GB Flash Storage
  • Retina Display
  • OS X Mountain Lion

Cons :

  • More Expensive Than Windows Laptops

In addition to its own display, the machine makes use of Thunderbolt digital video output via native Mini DisplayPort output. Optional adapters make it compatible with DVI, VGA, and dual-link DVI, and there is support for dual displays and video mirroring.

Additional connectivity options are provided by an HDMI port, two Thunderbolt ports, two high speed USB 3.0 ports, and an SDXC card slot. Bluetooth 4.0 makes it easy to connect to wireless mice, headset and other peripherals, while wireless networking is provided by built-in 802.11 b/g/n WiFi. Finally, a 720p HD FaceTime webcam is built in to the bezel above the machine’s display, making it easy to video chat with friends, family and colleagues.

The full-sized, backlit keyboard features an ambient light sensor which turns the backlight on or off as the current lighting conditions demand. Although a backlit keyboard may, at first, seem to be something of a luxury, or gimmick, it quickly becomes an essential feature if you intend to use the machine on the go, where lighting conditions are often far from ideal.

As with all Macs, this machine ships with OS X Mountain Lion, which includes Safari, Mail, Messages, FaceTime and a whole bunch of other applications to make your work – and play – easier, more intuitive and, ultimately, fun. Committed Windows users may find that the OS X environment takes a little getting used to, but they should quickly become familiar with all the facilities that it has to offer.

Overall, the Apple MacBook Pro ME665LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop with Retina Display is an impressively powerful machine, tucked into a thin, stylish and surprisingly lightweight case. If you’re already a Mac convert, you will need no persuading to give the ME665LL/A a try. Others should make haste to at least consider the possibilities on offer. This is certainly not a cheap option, and there are many Windows-based laptops available at a fraction of this machine’s price. They, however, are not MacBooks, and cannot boast the fusion of power and design that sets these machines apart from the competition. If you have been looking for a new, premium, laptop, this could well be the device you’ve been searching for.
