ASUS F55A-AH91 15.6-Inch Laptop Review

ASUS F55A-AH91 15.6-Inch Laptop

The ASUS F55A-AH91 15.6-Inch Laptop is an entry-level machine ideal for both work and entertainment on a budget.

As you might reasonably expect from an entry-level laptop, this machine is never going to be a match for mid-range and high-end models such as might appeal to power users and gamers. On the other hand, the vast majority of routine computing tasks are relatively undemanding, and simply don’t require the sheer power available to a high performance machine.

For example, email, surfing the web, social networking, sharing pictures and movies or video chatting with friends via the built-in webcam and many other routine tasks are all well within the capabilities of this machine.

It is powered by a 2.3GHz Intel Pentium B980 CPU, supported by 4GB of DDR3 RAM (expandable to 8GB), a 320GB hard drive and Intel GMA HD integrated graphics. The B980 processor is a dual-core CPU specifically designed for use in entry-level laptops, offering the kind of power consumption / performance balance that your would expect from devices in this class – it will, broadly speaking, get the job done, but it certainly isn’t fastest component on the market.

However, in collaboration with the 4GB of memory installed in this system, it should be more than capable of running the supplied copy of Windows 8 and carrying out the tasks generally expected of an entry-level machine, such as those mentioned above. The machine’s 320GB hard drive, while not the largest on the market by some considerable margin, should, again, be easily large enough to store most users’ documents, images, music and videos. But, if you need even more storage space, it’s an easy matter to connect an external hard drive to either the machine’s high-speed USB 3.0 port or one of its standard USB 2.0 ports.

Pros :

  • Good Entry-Level Laptop For Everyday Tasks
  • Adequate RAM
  • Reasonable Hard Disk
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • Not Suitable For Serious Gaming

This machine is equipped with the usual set of input / output ports in addition to the USB ports already mentioned above. Network connectivity is provided by a Gigabit Ethernet port for wired networking and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi for wireless networks, a VGA port makes it possible to connect an old-style monitor or projector to the machine and an HDMI port makes it easy to watch movies (either streamed from the internet or directly from the built-in DVD RW) on a monitor or large-screen HDTV.

Microphone in, headphones out, stereo speakers and a 4-in-1 card reader round off the list of standard ports.

The 15″ HD, LED-backlit display is driven by integrated Intel GMA HD graphics. This is, again, a reasonable choice for an entry-level machine, in that it should be able to cope well with routine tasks, and won’t struggle with HD video or even casual gaming. It will, however, struggle with more demanding games, as you would expect from an entry-level machine.

The machine also presents some more innovative features. SmartLogon, a facial recognition technology that keeps your machine secure by preventing unwanted access by other people without the need for a password, and ASUS Palm Proof Technology, which can help prevent accidental cursor movement on the trackpad while typing. As anyone who spends a great deal of time typing on laptops will understand, unintentional cursor movement caused by accidental touches to the trackpad is extremely irritating and very distracting, so anything that helps to reduce the problem is a welcome addition.

Measuring 15.1″ x 10.2″ x 1.4″ (W x D x H) and weighing just 5.72lbs (including the 4-cell battery), this machine is by no means the smallest laptop on the market, but it is still small enough to be easily portable, and retains useful features – such as a built-in DVD burner – that are often omitted from the smallest laptops in order to save space.

Overall, this machine should serve well as an entry-level laptop. It is well equipped to handle the tasks expected of machines in this class, and offers the reassurance of a well-known brand coupled with reasonable performance at a budget-friendly price. If you’re in the market for an entry-level machine for everyday tasks, the ASUS F55A-AH91 15.6-Inch Laptop may be just what you’ve been looking for.
