At its heart lies a fourth generation, Intel Core i7-4700HQ quad core processor – a high-end component based on the Haswell architecture.  It is designed specifically to provide a good balance between power consumption and performance in powerful laptops. Intel’s Hyperthreading technology enables the processor’s four cores to handle up to eight threads simultaneously, ensuring that the CPU is always being used as efficiently as possible. The processor also supports Intel’s Turbo Boost, allowing each core to automatically adjust its own speed as needed from their base speed of 2.4GHz up to a maximum of 3.4GHz. This ensures that processing power is available for your most demanding applications when it’s needed, and that power consumption is automatically reduced when it isn’t.

The processor is supported by 8GB of DDR3 SDRAM. This should be more than enough memory to allow the pre-installed copy of Windows 8 to show off its new features, and multi-task you favorite applications with ease.

Permanent storage of your documents, music, movies, pictures and software applications is provided by a 1TB Hard Disk Drive (HDD). This should provide more than enough storage capacity for most purposes although, of course, if more storage is required, it is an easy matter to attach an external hard drive to one of the machine’s three, high-speed, USB 3.0 ports. On the subject of disk drives, this laptop includes a built-in DVD-RW / CD-RW – great for installing software, backing up data or simply relaxing with a movie after work.

Pros :

  • Poweful general purpose laptop
  • Intel Core i7-4700HQ 2.4 GHz Processor
  • 8 GB DDR3 RAM
  • 1 TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
  • 15.6″ 16:9 HD (1366×768)/ IPS FHD (1920×1080) LED Backlight Non-Glare LCD Panel
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • Graphics are underpowered for serious gaming

The machine is fitted with a 15.6″ HD, 1900 x 1080 pixel, LED backlit touch screen, allowing it to take full advantage of the new touch-driven features found in Windows 8. It is driven by an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600 controller which, although noticeably more capable than older Intel HD Graphics 4000 technology, is still no match for a dedicated graphics card. That said, it should cope easily with the routine tasks that a workhorse laptop is frequently required to carry out; email, productivity software, surfing the web, updating social status, HD video and even casual gaming are all well within its reach, but it may struggle with today’s more demanding games.

That said, this is not, and does not claim to be, a gaming laptop. It is a powerful, general purpose workhorse, and is well suited to fulfilling that role.

There will inevitably come a time when, no matter how good the laptop’s screen may be, you will want or need to use a larger display – perhaps to watch a movie or make a presentation. The N550JV-DB72T offers a built in HDMI port, enabling it to connect to an HDTV, modern monitor or projector with ease.

As you would expect from this class of laptop, there are plenty of connectivity options in evidence. For wired peripherals there are the already mentioned three high speed USB 3.0 ports, making it easy to attach external disk drives, printers and scanners etc to the machine. Naturally, the USB 3.0 standard is backwards compatible, meaning that you can still use all your existing USB 2.0 devices with the N550JV-DB72T, although, obviously, they will not be able to take full advantage of the features offered by USB 3.0 – only USB 3.0 devices attached to a USB 3.0 port can do that!

Staying with wireless connectivity, the machine supports 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi, ensuring that you can stay in touch while you’re on the move. More conventional wired networking is also available via a built-in Ethernet port for those who want or need it.

The machine features a built-in HD webcam, making it video-chat capable right out of the box. Since Skype, the popular video-chat software, is included with Windows 8, you don’t even need to install any extra software – just sign in to your Skype account, or sign up for one if you don’t have one already, and you’ll be chatting with friends and colleagues in minutes.

As befits a workhorse machine, this laptop has a full-size keyboard with separate numeric keypad – an indispensable addition if you routinely input numeric data. The keyboard is chiclet style, and backlit – again, an essential but often overlooked feature that makes it easy to carry on working regardless of local lighting conditions.

Measuring 15.08 x 10.04 x 1.09 inches (L x W xH) and weighing 5.7 pounds, this machine is neither the smallest nor lightest laptop on the market, but nor is unreasonably large or heavy for the features it offers. It should still be easily portable, and, with a battery life of up to 5.5 hours, it should be capable of getting a fair amount of work done between charges.

Overall, the ASUS N550JV-DB72T 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop is a great choice if you’re in the market for a powerful, workhorse laptop with sleek good looks. It has enough memory for Windows 8 to perform well, copious amounts of long term storage space, lots of connectivity options and reasonably battery life. The integrated Intel HD Graphics aren’t really suitable for sophisticated gaming, but should be more than adequate for routine tasks. If you’re looking for a gaming laptop, this isn’t the machine for you, but as a general purpose machine with plenty of processing power it has a lot to offer.
