ASUS N56VJ-DH71 15.6-Inch Full-HD 1080P Laptop Review

ASUS N56VJ-DH71 15.6-Inch Full-HD 1080P Laptop

The ASUS N56VJ-DH71 15.6-Inch Full-HD 1080P Laptop is, first and foremost, a multimedia notebook that caters for those who need high quality multimedia capabilities on the move.

Its award winning design looks great, and, with speakers co-developed with Bang & Olufsen ICEpower, it sounds even better.

At its heart lies a fast, third generation Intel Core i7-3630QM quad-core processor, running at 2.4GHz, although Intel’s Turbo Boost technology can increase this to a maximum of 3.4GHz on an as-needed basis. The processor, which features integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000, is specifically designed to balance high performance with low power consumption, and is best suited to mid-range and better laptops.

It is supported by 8GB of DDR3 RAM, which should be more than enough for most purposes, and will easily allow the pre-installed copy of Windows 8 Home Premium (64-Bit) to show off its new features while multi-tasking all your favourite applications. However, if more RAM becomes desirable, it can be upgraded to a maximum of 16GB.

A generous 1TB hard drive provides permanent storage for all of your documents, music, pictures and videos, and should be more than large enough for most purposes. Again, however, there should be no difficulty in upgrading the hard drive – or even swapping it for a faster (but probably smaller and much more expensive) Solid State Drive (SSD) should the need arise.

Pros :

  • Fast, Powerful Multimedia Laptop
  • Large Hard Disk
  • Plenty Of RAM
  • Nvidia Optimus Graphics
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • A Little Heavy, But Not Too Heavy To Be Portable

The 15.6-Inch, 1080P Full-HD LED Screen is driven by Nvidia Optimus technology, allowing the machine to seamlessly switch between the onboard Intel HD Graphics 4000 for routine tasks and an Nvidia GT 635M graphics card with 2GB of dedicate RAM for more demanding tasks. This arrangement is intended to – and does – balance power consumption with performance, ensuring that the more power-hungry GT 635M is only used when it is needed.

Should you need a larger display – perhaps for watching movies, either streamed directly form the internet or played on the machine’s DVD RW – it is possible to connect an HDTV or monitor to the laptop’s HDMI port. There is also a VGA port for older monitors and projectors.

Other input / output ports include two high speed USB 3.0 ports, two standard USB 2.0 ports for connecting wired peripherals and Bluetooth 4.0 for communicating with wireless mice, headsets and other devices. For network access you have the choice of 802.11 b/g/n WiFi or a Gigabit Ethernet port for wired networking.

A 3-in-1 multi-format (SD, MMC, MS) card reader, a 2.0 megapixel webcam and standard microphone in / headphones out jacks complete the usual lineup of ports.

With a weight of 6lbs, and measuring 15.6″ x 10.6″ x 1.1″ (W x D x H), there should be no difficulty in carrying this machine around, even though it is neither the smallest nor the lightest machine on the market. Those smaller, lighter machines often lack features – such as the built-in DVD RW drive – that most people would consider essential in a portable multimedia machine, making a little extra bulk acceptable and even expected.

If you’re in the market for a powerful multimedia machine that can handle all your day-to-day computing needs – and more – then the ASUS N56VJ-DH71 15.6-Inch Full-HD 1080P Laptop may be just the machine you’re looking for.
