This computing powerhouse (model number 90NB04J1-M00040) is driven by a fourth generation Intel Core i7-4700HQ processor. Based on Intel’s Haswell architecture, this quad core processor is optimized to provide the best possible balance between energy efficiency and computing performance in high-spec laptops. It supports Hyperthreading, which enables each core to handle up to two threads in parallel, and Turbo Boost, which allows each core to automatically adjust its own speed, as needed, from the base speed of 2.4 GHz up to a maximum of 3.4 GHz. In combination, these technologies ensure that the processor is always making best use of available resources, conserves power when possible and delivers maximum performance when needed.

The processor is supported by 12 GB of DDR3 memory. While this is a perfectly respectable amount of RAM, and should be quite adequate for many purposes, it is worth noting that the machine can handle a maximum of 32 GB of memory. So if you really, really need that much RAM, this machine is cable of using it.

A 1TB (1024 GB) Hard Disk Drive (HDD) provides permanent storage for all your documents, music, pictures, movies and, of course, games. This should provide plenty of storage to get started with. However, unlike many laptops, the ROG G750JM-DS71 features two disk drive bays, so, should you wish to, you could add a second hard drive, or 2.5-inch Solid State Drive (SSD) to the machine to give even more storage space.

Pros :

  • Excellent, high-performance gaming laptop
  • Intel Core i7-4700HQ 2.4Ghz (Turbo 3.4 GHz)
  • 12 GB DDR3 memory
  • 1 TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
  • 17.3-inch screen,
  • GeForce GTX 860M 2GB
  • Windows 8.1
  • 3.5-hour battery life

Cons :

  • Maybe a little large and heavy, but not unreasonably so

Staying with storage and disk drives for a moment, this machine features a built-in DVD-RW optical drive. Despite the rise in popularity of USB-based storage options, and ubiquitous cloud storage, the convenience of having an integral optical drive is hard to beat, and it’s good to see one installed in this machine.

The 17.3-inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel, anti-glare, LED backlit, matte display is driven NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M dedicated graphics with Optimus technology. The GeForce GTX 860M is a powerful DirectX 11 compatible graphics card designed for use in high-spec laptops – the version in this laptop is fitted with 2GB of dedicated memory. However, as you would expect from a high performance graphics card, it also consumes (relatively speaking) a great deal of power. The solution is two use two graphics controllers – the GeForce GTX 860M, and a less capable, but more energy efficient integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600. Optimus technology allows the machine to automatically use the HD Graphics 4600 controller for routine, less demanding tasks, and the GeForce GTX 860M for applications that need the best possible graphics performance, seamlessly switching between the two as needed. The result is an elegant balance between power consumption and performance.

No matter how good the machine’s 17.3-inch display may be, there will almost certainly be times when you want to connect to an external display. For those occasions, the ROG G750JM-DS71 offers a number of options. An HDMI 1.4 port supports 4K2K, allowing you to connect to displays with far higher resolutions than current 1080p devices. The machine’s Trinity Display Technology enables it to drive up to three external displays simultaneously, via HDMI and / or Mini DisplayPort 1.2 – take your pick, and experience the benefits of multi-monitor support. There is also a legacy VGA port for connecting to older monitors, projectors etc.

Other connectivity options include four high-speed USB 3.0 ports, making it easy to connect all your favorite wired peripherals. And, for wireless devices, there is built-in Bluetooth 4.0 support. The machine also features Intel’s Thunderbolt technology, which combines PCI Express and DisplayPort into one, consolidated, high speed connection.

High speed, low latency, networking is essential for any gaming machine, and the ROG G750JM-DS71 provides both wired and wireless options. For those who want, or need, to connect to a wired network, a gigabit Ethernet port provides all the speed you should need. Wireless networking, on the other hand, is provided by built-in 802.11 ac WiFi.

An HD webcam makes this machine video-chat ready right out of the box. The supplied copy of Windows 8.1 includes the popular Skype video-chat software, so all you need to do is sign in to your account, or sign up for a new one, and you’ll be ready to chat in just a few minutes – nothing to download or install!

Sound, of course, is just as important as graphics for a gaming laptop, and again this machine is well equipped, featuring built-in speakers and subwoofer with MaxxAudio support, as well as an array microphone. For those times when it’s better to keep the noise level down, there is also a headphone jack that is backed by an onboard amplifier to provide more accurate and detailed stereo sounds.

On those occasions, you might also find yourself gaming in low light levels, which can make it difficult to hit the right keys at the right time! Fortunately, this machine features a one-piece backlit keyboard designed specifically for gaming. With guaranteed strength and durability, and 2.5mm key travel, you can be sure of smooth, accurate responses no matter how hard you play!

Cooling and overclocking are topics that often go hand-in-hand for gaming laptops, and the ROG G750JM-DS71 is no exception. ASUS-exclusive TurboMaster technology supports overclocking up to 5%, while GPU Tweak software lets you push the machine to its limits in safety. Dual independent CPU and GPU fans ensure that each component is kept cool, while copper heatsinks conduct heat quickly and efficiently away from delicate components, to be safely expelled from the back of the machine.

The machine measures 16.10 x 12.50 x 2 inches, and weighs a hefty 9.9 pounds – not an unusual size or weight for a machine in this class, but something to be aware of if you’re planning to carry it in a backpack or case. Be sure to find one that it will fit into!

Overall, the ASUS ROG G750JM-DS71 17.3-inch Gaming Laptop with GeForce GTX 860M Graphics is an excellent choice for gamers and, indeed, anyone who needs serious computing and graphics power in a portable package. It’s quite large, and fairly heavy, but not to that point that it’s difficult to carry around. If you’re looking for a new gaming laptop, this could well be the machine you’ve been waiting for!
