As you might reasonably expect, compromises will have to be made in any machine that attempts to bridge the gap between to essentially different classes of computing equipment. However, in this case, they aren’t too onerous, and, as long as you approach the machine with realistic expectations, it should be easily capable of carrying out the kinds of tasks it was designed for – everyday computing, with an emphasis on power efficiency and battery life rather than raw processing performance.

The machine is driven by Intel 64 Bit Quad Core Baytrail-T Z3795 processor running at 1.59GHz, and capable of reaching speeds of up 2.39GHz thanks to Intel’s Turbo Boost technology. The Z3795 features significantly improved performance over previous generations of Atom processor, and should be able to handle routine computing tasks without difficulty. Word processing, email, surfing the web, HD video playback and casual gaming should all be well within its capabilities, but it will probably struggle with the more demanding requirements of modern games or video editing software, for example.

The processor is supported by 4GB of DDR3 memory. This should be more than enough for the machine to run the supplied copy of Windows 8.1 (64-bit) without difficulty, enabling you to multitask your favorite applications.

For permanent storage of your pictures, documents, music and movies – and, of course, your application software – the machine is fitted with 64GB of solid state storage. This is considerably less than you would expect to find in a modern full-spec laptop, particularly when you consider that the pre-installed copy of Windows takes up approximately half of that space. However, should you need additional storage space, the dock portion of this convertible device features a Smart HD Dock, making it a simple matter to add a conventional hard disk of up to 1TB capacity to the machine.

Pros :

  • Convertible Laptop / Tablet
  • Intel 64 Bit Quad Core Baytrail-T Z3795 1.59GHz (Turbo up to 2.39GHz)
  • 64GB Solid-State in tablet
  • 4GB RAM
  • 9-Hour battery life
  • 2MP Webcam and 5MP Rear Camera
  • Wireless Dual-Band 802.11ABGN and Bluetooth 4.0
  • Windows 8.1

Cons :

  • Small storage capacity, though can be user-upgraded
  • Underpowered for serious gaming

Along with the full-size keyboard and touchpad, the dock also houses a USB 3.0 port for high speed data connections, as well as a standard USB 2.0 port, making it easy to hook up all your favorite devices to the machine. It also features an Ethernet port for connecting to a wired network – something of a rarity in convertible devices, and, if wired networking is important to you, a point that might make the T200TA-C1 even more attractive than it already is.

The screen / tablet part of this convertible device isn’t devoid of input / output connectivity, either. A microHDMI port for connecting to an HDTV or modern monitor, microUSB for attaching external peripherals and a microSDXC slot for removable storage make this part of the device fully functional, even without the dock. Of course, a tablet is of little use without a network connection, and this device features Dual-Band 802.11ABGN wireless networking. Bluetooth 4.0 is also supported, making it easy to connect wireless devices.

The tablet’s screen is an 11.6 inch multi-touch HD (1366x 768) IPS display, featuring a wide 178-degree viewing angle, making it ideal for both work and entertainment. A 2MP webcam built in to the front of the screen means that the device is video-chat ready right out of the box, while the 5PM rear camera makes it easy to grab pictures as you work.

Measuring 12.0 x 7.9 x 1.0 inches, and weighing 3.6lbs, this device is small and light enough to be easily portable, while being sturdy enough to cope with being used on the move. The dock’s hinge, into which the screen / tablet fits when the machine is being used in laptop mode, is particularly noteworthy, being firm enough to hold the screen in position yet remains easily adjustable.

Overall, the ASUS Transformer Book T200TA-C1-BL 2-in-1 Detachable 11.6″ Laptop, 4 GB RAM 64 GB Storage makes an excellent choice for anyone seeking a convertible laptop / tablet solution. It can’t match the performance of a fairly well equipped standard laptop, but then it isn’t intended to. Nor is it as small and lightweight as many tablets. It does, however, boast up to 9 hours batter life, a full-sized keyboard and the ability to run standard Windows applications, while retaining the convenience of a tablet. This device should be able to handle everyday computing tasks with ease, and ss long as you aren’t expecting to run highly demanding applications, it is well worth considering.
