ASUS VivoBook S400CA-DH51T 14.1-Inch Touch Ultrabook Review

ASUS VivoBook S400CA-DH51T 14.1-Inch Touch Ultrabook

The ASUS VivoBook S400CA-DH51T 14.1-Inch Touch Ultrabook is a lightweight, stylish laptop designed for professionals and power users who need to get real work done on the move.

With a 14.1 inch, 16:9 HD (1366×768), LED backlight touch screen and multitouch capable touchpad, this machine is able to take full advantage of the new, touch-oriented features in the pre-installed copy of Windows 8.

At its heart lies a 1.7 GHz Intel Core i5 3317U Processor – a third generation “Ivy Bridge” CPU designed to keep power consumption to a minimum while still offering a respectable degree of computing muscle. This is supported by 4GB of DDR3 RAM, which should be more than enough for most purposes, although more would, as always, have been better.

The 500GB hard drive is, again, more than adequate for most purposes, and has the added advantage of being a hybrid unit with an integrated 24GB Solid-State Drive for high speed access to frequently used data and, potentially, much faster bootup and shutdown.

Pros :

  • Lightweight, powerful workhorse
  • Large, Fast, Hybrid Hard Disk
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • Graphics inadequate for serious gaming
  • No optical drive

That impressive touch screen is driven by Intel GMA HD graphics technology, which is more than adequate for day-to-day computing needs. It will cope well with productivity applications, HD video and casual gaming, but more demanding games are beyond it’s capabilities. If you’re looking for a gaming laptop, you would be better off looking elsewhere, but for a solid workhorse machine, the Intel GMA HD graphics are more than good enough.

If you’d prefer to watch your movies on a bigger screen, you can hook up a monitor or HDTV to the laptop’s HDMI port. There’s also a VGA port if you need to connect and older-style monitor or projector.

Other connectivity options include an ethernet port for wired networking, an 802.11 b/g/n WiFi for wireless network access, two standard USB 2.0 ports, one high speed USB 3.0 port. As with many Ultrabooks, this machine doesn’t have an integrated optical drive, so if you think you’re going to need a CD / DVD drive you’ll have to purchase an external unit and connect it to one of those USB ports.

This machine measures 13.35 x 0.83 x 9.40 inches and weighs around 4 lbs, making it a powerful yet easily portable choice, ideal for surfing the web, running productivity software, video chatting via the built-in HD webcam or relaxing after hours with a movie. If you need a capable laptop with professional processing power and the ability to run the latest Windows 8 software the way it was designed to be run – with a touch screen – this may well be the machine for you.
