ASUS VivoBook X202E-DH31T 11.6-Inch Touch Laptop Review

ASUS VivoBook X202E-DH31T 11.6-Inch Touch Laptop

The ASUS VivoBook X202E-DH31T 11.6-Inch Touch Laptop is a small, lightweight laptop that is ideal for students and professionals who need everyday computing power in a highly portable form.

Equipped with a touch screen and Windows 8, the latest, touch-centric version of Microsoft’s flagship operating system, this machine offers features that you’d normally expect to find in a much bigger, more expensive product.

Although by no means top of the range, the 1.8GHz, third generation Intel Core i3-3217U processor with Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 Technology at the heart of this laptop is easily capable of handling the routine tasks for which this laptop was designed. Whether chatting with your friends via the built-in webcam, surfing the net, taking notes in class, writing a report on the go or relaxing with a movie after hours, there should be sufficient processing power here to get the job done.

The machine ships with 4GB of DDR3 RAM, which should be adequate for most purposes. However, it may be difficult or impossible to upgrade to more RAM in the future, so if you think you may need more than 4GB for a specific purpose, this may not be the laptop for you. In most cases, however, 4GB should be fine.

Fortunately, similar concerns do not apply to the 500GB hard drive that ships with this machine. There should be plenty of room for files, pictures, music and movies, and although some laptops ship with bigger hard drives, 500GB is probably more than enough for most people. In the event that it is not, it is a relatively simple task to upgrade the drive to a larger model.

Pros :

  • Very small, lightweight, everyday machine
  • Touch screen
  • Large Hard Disk
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • Underpowered for serious gaming
  • RAM may not be upgradeable
  • No optical drive

Alternatively, you can connect an external hard drive for extra storage, or for making backups of your data, via the laptop’s USB ports, of which there are two standard USB 2.o ports and one high-speed USB 3.0 port. Other connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.0 for connecting wireless devices, a wired ethernet port and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi for connection to home and corporate networks – and, of course, the internet, a 3-in-1 card reader for transferring pictures from memory cards, a VGA port for connecting to older-style monitors and projectors and an HDMI port for connecting to an HDTV or monitor. Built-in Stereo speakers with Bang & Olufsen ICEpower provide audio output, and a combine headphone and microphone socket caters for speech input and more private sound consumption.

The laptop’s own 11.6-inch, HD, LED backlit, capacitive touch screen display is driven by Intel GMA HD graphics technology. Although easily adequate for day-to-day tasks, handling HD video and casual gaming, GMA HD graphics are incapable of handling today’s more demanding games, so if you’re looking for a gaming laptop you may want to look elsewhere.

This machine measures 11.9″ x 7.9″ x 0.8″~0.9 (W x D x H) and weighs just 2.9lb, including its 2-cell battery. Unsurprisingly, given its size, there is no optical drive, so if you think you will need one you will have to purchase an external USB unit. Beyond this minor inconvenience, however, it is very difficult to find fault with this laptop.

If you’re in the market for a small, capable, highly portable laptop with Windows 8 and a touch screen, this could well be the machine for you.
