Asus X200CA-HCL1104G 11.6 inch Touch Screen Laptop Review

Asus X200CA-HCL1104G 11.6 inch Touch Screen Laptop

The Asus X200CA-HCL1104G 11.6 inch Touch Screen Laptop is a small, lightweight, easily portable laptop designed to cope with routine computing tasks on the move. Email, social status updates, surfing the web, HD video and office applications should all be well within its capabilities, making this an ideal machine for keeping in touch or catching up with work while travelling.

The machine is powered by an Intel Celeron 1007U dual core processor, running at 1.5GHz. This entry level, Ultra Low Voltage CPU is specifically designed for use in small laptops and subnotebooks. It is based on Intel’s 3rd generation Ivy Bridge architecture, although several of the features found in more powerful Ivy Bridge processors are disabled in this component. Amongst them are Hyperthreading and Turbo Boost, meaning that each core operates at a fixed speed (1.5GHz in this case) and can handle only one thread at a time. In reality, however, their loss is unlikely to be a significant issue for the kinds of tasks that this machine is intended to cope with; if you need to run heavyweight applications such as video editing software, this may not be the laptop for you.

With 4GB of DDR3 RAM, the machine should have no difficulty in running the preinstalled copy of Windows 8, or multitasking your favorite applications. Naturally, the more memory a machine has, the better (in general) it will perform, and many more powerful (and expensive) machines feature considerably more than the 4GB of memory fitted to this machine. However, 4GB represents a sensible compromise between price and performance, and should be more than sufficient for this machine’s expected workload.

Similarly, the machine’s 320GB Hard Disk Drive (HDD) should cope adequately with everyday computing tasks, offering plenty of space for your pictures, music, movies and documents, despite providing considerably less storage space than many other, more powerful laptops. Again, this strikes a reasonable balance between price and performance and, should you need more storage, it is an easy matter to connect an external disk drive to one of the machine’s three USB ports. Staying with storage devices for a moment, it’s worth noting that this machine doesn’t have a built-in CD / DVD drive. While this is to be expected in a small, inexpensive and highly portable laptop, it does mean that, should you need an optical drive, you will need to purchase an external USB DVD drive.

Pros :

  • Small, Lightweight, Easily Portable
  • Ideal For Routine Tasks
  • Intel Celeron 1007U Dual-core 1.5GHz Processor
  • 4GB DDR3 SDRAM
  • 320GB Hard Disk
  • 1.6-inch High-Definition Touch Screen
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • No Optical Drive
  • Underpowered for serious gaming

The machine’s 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 HD touch screen display is driven by an integrated Intel HD Graphics controller. Again, this should be quite capable of handling the day-to-day computing tasks that the machine is designed for, including HD video, and maybe even some casual gaming. It will, however, struggle with the demands of modern games or other graphics-intensive applications.

For the times when you want – or need – to use a display larger than the machine’s built-in 11.6 inch screen, the X200CA-HCL1104G provides and HDMI port for connecting the laptop to an HDTV or modern monitor. There is also a legacy VGA port for connecting to older monitors, TVs and projectors etc.

Two standard USB 2.0 ports and one high-speed USB 3.0 port make it easy to connect all your favorite peripherals to the laptop. USB 2.0 ports are best used for devices that don’t need to quickly transfer large quantities of data to and from the laptop, while the USB 3.0 port is ideal for external hard drives etc., that need to do just that. And, for wireless devices, the machine includes support for Bluetooth 4.0.

Of course, no modern laptop would be complete without network access, and this machine offers you a choice between wired and wireless networking. A standard 10/100 Ethernet port provides for wired connectivity, while built-in 802.11 b/g/n WiFi makes allows you to connect to wireless networks, either at home or on the move.

As with many modern laptops, this machine includes a built-in webcam, making it video-chat capable right out of the box. The supplied copy of Windows 8 includes the popular Skype chat software, so you need only sign in to your account (or create one, if need be) and start chatting with your friends and colleagues – nothing to download, no need to install anything.

A headphone / mic combo jack and a built-in media card reader round off the machine’s extensive range of input / output and connectivity options.

Overall, the Asus X200CA-HCL1104G 11.6 inch Touch Screen Laptop is an impressive piece of kit. Measuring 11.90 x 7.90 x 1.20 inches and weighing just 3 pounds, this machine is small and lightweight enough to be easily portable, yet is capable of handling most routine tasks. Its touchscreen works well with the new, touch-driven elements of Windows 8, and its input / out options are a match for many more sophisticated machines. It isn’t really powerful enough to handle modern games, but then it isn’t intended to be – it is a budget-friendly, general purpose machine, and should be quite capable of fulfilling that role. If you’re looking for an easily portable machine for everyday tasks, this could well be the machine you’ve been waiting for.
