ASUS X202E-DB21T 11.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop Review

ASUS X202E-DB21T 11.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop

The ASUS X202E-DB21T 11.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (Grey) is a budget-friendly, entry-level machine, suitable for everyday computing tasks. Checking email, updating social status, watching videos, surfing the web, productivity applications and even a little casual gaming should be well within its capabilities.

Measuring 11.90 x 7.90 x 0.80 inches, and weighing just 2.9 pounds, this is a small, lightweight and easily portable device that would be equally at home on the road or in your living room – whether you’re taking work home, or just want to catch up with your Facebook friends around the house, this machine is ideal.

It is powered by an Intel Pentium 2117U 1.8 GHz processor, an Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) component specifically designed to offer a balance between value and performance in entry-level machines. Thanks to its relatively low power consumption, it is particularly suitable for use in small machines, making it a sensible choice for the X202E-DB21T.

The machine is fitted with 4GB of DDR3 memory, which should be enough to allow the pre-installed copy of Windows 8 to show off its new features. More memory is, of course, always welcome, and the supplied 4GB is somewhat less than is on offer in many more powerful (and expensive) laptops. Nevertheless, 4GB is, again, a sensible choice for a budget conscious, entry level machine, and should be sufficient for the kinds of tasks that it is likely to be used for.

For permanent storage of you music, movies, documents and pictures – and, of course, your software applications – this machine is equipped with a 500GB Hard Disk Drive (HDD). As with the choice of processor and memory, this represents a sensible balance between price and storage capacity. Although it offers less space than many other laptops, it is, nonetheless, a reasonably large disk drive, which should be more than adequate for most purposes.

Pros :

  • Good entry-level laptop
  • Intel Pentium 2117U 1.8 GHz processor
  • 4 GB DDR3 memory
  • 500 GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
  • 11.6-Inch Screen
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • Graphics are underpowered for serious gaming
  • No built-in Bluetooth

The ASUS X202E-DB21T features an 11.6 inch LED Backlight HD (1366 x 768) capacitive touch screen, allowing it to take full advantage of the new, touch-focused features of Windows 8. The display is driven by integrated Intel HD GMA graphics technology, which should be perfectly adequate for the routine tasks that this machine is likely to encounter. HD video and even casual gaming should be well within its capabilities, but it will almost certainly struggle with more demanding games.

There will inevitably be times when you want, or need, to use a larger monitor than the laptop’s built-in display. For those occasions, the machine is fitted with an HDMI port and a legacy VGA port. The HDMI port enables the laptop to connect to an HDTV or monitor, while the VGA port allows for connections to older monitors or projectors.

As you would expect from a modern laptop, both wired networking via an Ethernet port, and wireless networking via 802.11 b/g/n WiFi are supported, making it easy to get this machine online. It is worth noting, however, that there is no built-in Bluetooth connectivity in this device. Although this is easily remedied with a Bluetooth dongle, it is something to keep in mind if you need to connect to wireless Bluetooth peripherals.

The machine features an HD webcam, making it video chat capable right out of the box. Simply sign into your favorite video chat software (Windows 8 ships with Skype, but other popular chat software should be fine, too) and start chatting with friends and colleagues.

Two standard USB 2.0 ports and one high speed USB 3.0 port ensure that it won’t be difficult to connect wired peripherals to this machine. The high speed USB 3.0 port is best used for devices such as external disk drives, that need to transfer as much data back and forth as quickly as possible, while the standard USB 2.0 ports are more suitable for less demanding peripherals. That said, the USB specification ensures that ports and devices are interchangeable – USB 2.0 devices will work in USB 3.0 ports and vice versa, but only USB 3.0 devices in USB 3.0 ports will be able to take full advantage of the high speed connection.

An SD/MMC/MS card reader and a microphone / headphone combo jack round off the list of input / output ports.

Overall, the ASUS X202E-DB21T 11.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (Grey) offers some good features at an attractive price. It is, of course, an entry-level machine, and should not be expected to compete head-to-head with more powerful (and therefore expensive) laptops. However, keeping that in mind, this machine should be perfectly capable of carrying routine computing tasks without difficulty. If you’re looking for a low cost laptop for everyday tasks – perhaps as a second machine, as an introduction to computers for a novice or to help the kids with their homework – the X202E-DB21T should definitely be on your shortlist.
