Driving the machine is a 4th generation Intel i7-4700HQ processor, a quad-core component that is specifically designed to balance frugal power consumption with excellent performance in high-end laptops. It makes use of Intel’s Hyperthreading technology to enable each core to handle up to two threads in parallel, ensuring that, with up to eight threads on the go, the processor is always kept busy. Thanks to Intel’s Turbo Boost technology, it is also capable of automatically adjusting the speed of each core, from the base speed of 2.4GHz up to a maximum of 3.4GHz. Together, these techniques mean that the processor runs as efficiently as possible, saving energy and prolonging battery life when dealing with trivial tasks and delivering extra speed when it’s needed for more demanding applications.

Working alongside the processor is 8GB of DDR3 memory – a reasonable amount of RAM that should allow the installed copy of Windows 8 to perform well, multitasking your applications with ease. Of course, in general, the more memory a system has the better, and many higher-end laptops now ship with 16GB or more. However, the supplied 8GB represents a good compromise between cost and performance that should enable the machine to handle demanding applications without incurring unnecessary expense.

Pros :

  • Powerful general Purpose Machine
  • Intel i7-4700HQ Haswell 2.4 GHz Processor
  • 8 GB DDR3
  • Large 1 TB Hard Disk
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • Graphics May Be Underpowered For Serious Gaming

For permanent storage of your documents, music, pictures and videos, this machine is fitted with a 1TB Hard Disk Drive (HDD). As with the amount of RAM installed in the system, this represents a sensible balance between generous storage capacity and expense – 1TB should be more than adequate for most purposes.

Staying with storage devices, this laptop also features a built-in DVD/RW drive for installing software from optical media, burning music or data disk or simply watching a movie from your collection. Although the advent of SUB memory sticks and cloud storage have rendered optical drives less important than they once were, they are still a very useful thing to have and it’s good to see one in the X750JA-DB71.

The machine’s 17.3-inch, HD+(1600 x 900 pixel) LED-backlit screen is driven by an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600 controller. This should be more than adequate to cope with the needs of most applications, including HD video, video chat and casual gaming. However, even though HD Graphics 4600 is notably more powerful than the older older HD Graphics 4000 found in 3rd Generation Intel Core processors, it may still struggle with the demands of today’s most challenging games, particularly at high detail settings, so if you’re specifically looking for a gaming laptop this may not be the machine for you. That said, this is not, and doesn’t purport to be a gaming machine, and it’s possibly unfair to compare it to one – it is a powerful, general-purpose machine, for which the HD Graphics 4600 controller is ideal.

There will inevitably be times when you want or need to use a bigger display – perhaps to watch a movie or make a presentation. For those occasions, the ASUS X750JA-DB71 provides an HDMI port, making it easy to connect this laptop to an HDTV or modern monitor etc. There is also a legacy VGA port, should you need to connect to an older monitor or projector.

A similar choice applies to network connectivity. For wired networking, the machine is fitted with a standard Ethernet port, and includes built-in 802.11 b/g/n WiFi for easy access to wireless networks.

It’s equally easy to connect your favorite USB devices to this laptop; two standard USB 2.0 ports and two high speed USB 3.0 ports ensure that you won’t run short of USB ports. Of course, USB ports and devices are interchangeable – USB 2.0 devices work in USB 3.0 ports and vice versa, but to take advantage of the latest high speed features of USB 3.0 devices they need to be plugged into a USB 3.0 port.

The array of input / output options available on this machine is rounded out by a headphone / microphone combo jack, an SD Card Reader and an HD Webcam. Thanks to the built-in webcam, the laptop is video-chat capable right out of the box – the bundled copy of Skype, the popular video chat software, means you’ll be ready to chat with your friends and colleagues in minutes.

Measuring 16.30 x 10.60 x 1.20 inches, and weighing 6.2 pounds this machine is small and lightweight enough to be easily portable while still being sturdy enough to withstand the inevitable bumps that challenge any laptop. And, with a reported battery life of up to 3.65 hours, you can be sure of getting plenty of work done no matter where you take it. Of course, that’s made even easier by the machine’s full size Chiclet style keyboard with built in numeric keypad, and large multi-touch touchpad.

Overall, the ASUS X750JA-DB71 17.3-Inch Laptop (Dark Gray) is an excellent all-rounder – powerful enough to get real work done on the move, and great for relaxing after work, too. It might struggle with demanding games, but then it isn’t designed as a gaming laptop. If you’re looking for a powerful, general purpose laptop, this could well be the machine for you.
