Driving this high-end laptop is a fourth generation Intel Core i7-4500U processor. Based on the popular Haswell architecture, this dual core, Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) processor is specifically designed to balance energy efficiency with computing performance in powerful laptops and Ultrabooks. Thanks to Intel’s Hyper Threading technology, each of the CPU’s cores is capable of handling up to two threads in parallel, ensuring that best use is made of the processor’s resources. Each core also makes use of Intel’s Turbo Boost feature to automatically adjust its own speed, as needed, from the base speed of 1.8 GHz up to a maximum of 3.0 GHz. Together, these techniques ensure that the processor remains energy efficient, saving power where possible while also delivering performance when it’s needed.

Pros :

  • Good, powerful, general purpose laptop
  • Intel Core i7-4500U processor
  • 8 GB DDR3 memory
  • 1 TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
  • Windows 8.1

Cons :

  • Graphics may be underpowered for serious gaming

The processor is supported by 8 GB of DDR3 memory. This should be more than enough to allow the supplied copy of Windows 8.1 to run well, multitasking your applications with ease.

A 1 TB (1024 GB) Hard Disk Drive (HDD) provides permanent storage for all of your documents, music, pictures and movies. As with the machine’s memory, this should be more than enough storage capacity for most users, but, if more disk space is eventually required, it is a simple matter to connect an external HDD to one of the machine’s USB ports.

On the subject of disk drives, this machine features a built-in DVD-RW. In many cases, particularly in small, lightweight or budget designs, manufacturers omit an optical drive, no doubt as a result of the surge in cloud storage and ubiquitous USB memory sticks etc. However, optical drives are still useful – say, for watching a movie from your collection, or installing software from physical media, and it is good to see one included in this laptop.

The machine’s 15.6-inch, 1366 x 768 pixel, HD backlit screen is driven by integrated Intel HD Graphics 4400. It should cope well with most tasks, but may struggle somewhat with the demands of modern games. That said, this is not, and doesn’t pretend to be a gaming laptop; it is a powerful, general purpose machine, and should carry out that function perfectly well.

For those occasions when you want, or need, to connect the machine to an external display, an HDMI port is provided, making it easy to watch a movie on your HDTV, for example. There is no legacy VGA port, however, so if you want to hook up to a TV or monitor that doesn’t offer HDMI you will need an adapter.

You have a greater choice when it comes to networking, however. This machine features both a standard Ethernet port for connecting to wired networks, and built-in 802.11 b/g/n WiFi for wireless networking.

Other connectivity options include two standard USB 2.0 ports and two high speed USB 3.0 ports, so you can be sure that you will haven enough ports to attach all your favorite devices. An 8-in-1 media card reader rounds off the array of input / output options on offer on this machine.

The machine measures 19.29 x 13.15 x 3.31 inches and weighs just 7.2 pounds – sturdy, without being too large or heave to carry easily. And, with a full-size, spill resistant keyboard featuring a 10 key numeric keypad, you can be sure of getting some work done whether you’re at your desk, on your sofa or relaxing in a cafe.

Overall, the Dell Inspiron 15.6-Inch Laptop (i15RM-7565sLV) is a great choice. It is powerful yet easily portable, representing the ability to get real work done on the move. It isn’t a games machine, and may struggle with modern, demanding games as a result, but as an all-rounder with sufficient power to handle most tasks it is well worth considering.
