The Dell Inspiron 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (i15RMT-5124sLV) is a mid-range machine that should easily cope with the demands of routine computing tasks. Checking email, surfing the web, updating social status, office software, video chat, watching HD video and even casual gaming are all well within its capabilities.

A fourth generation Intel Core i5-4200U processor is the driving force behind this machine. Based on Intel’s Haswell architecture, this dual core, Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) component is designed to balance energy efficiency with processing performance in small laptops and Ultrabooks. It supports Hyper Threading, which allows each core to handle up to two threads in parallel, and Turbo Boost, which enables each core to automatically adjust its speed from 1.6 GHz up to a maximum of 2.6 GHz, on an as needed basis. Together, these technologies ensure that the processor is always making best use of available resources, conserving energy where possible and delivering performance when it’s needed.

The processor is supported by a healthy 6 GB of DDR3L memory. That should be more than enough to allow the supplied copy of Windows 8.1 to perform well, multitasking your favorite applications with ease. Of course, more memory is almost always a good thing, but the 6 GB supplied with this machine is more than is often found in this class of laptop, and represents a good compromise between cost and features.

Pros :

  • Good mid range, general purpose machine
  • Intel Core i5-4200U dual core processor
  • 500 GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
  • 15.6-Inch Touch Screen
  • Windows 8.1

Cons :

  • Graphics underpowered for serious gaming

A 500 GB Hard Disk Drive (HDD) provides permanent storage for all your documents, images, music, movies and, of course, software applications. Again, this represents a reasonable balance between cost and storage capacity, and is pretty much in line with the HDDs found on other machines in this class. In reality, 500 GB should be more than adequate for most purposes and, if more storage space eventually becomes necessary, it is a simple matter to connect an external HDD to one of the machine’s USB ports.

Staying with storage for a moment, the machine features a built-in DVD-RW optical drive. Although optical drives are, in general, less important than they once were, having been overtaken to some extent by memory keys and cloud storage, they are still sufficiently useful for it to be a welcome inclusion in this laptop.

The machine’s 15.6-inch, 1366 x 768 pixel, LED backlit touch screen is driven by integrated Intel HD Graphics 4400, which should be easily capable of handling the routine computing tasks that this laptop is designed to undertake. It may, however, struggle to cope with demanding, graphics intensive modern games – hardly unreasonable, since this isn’t, and doesn’t claim to be a gaming laptop, but it is worth keeping in mind that if you intend to play demanding games at high detail settings, this may not be the laptop for you. For everyone else, however, the integrated graphics should be perfectly adequate.

Sooner or later, you will want, or need to use an external display – for making presentations, or watching a movie with friends, for example. For those occasions, the machine provides both an HDMI port for connecting to a modern monitor or HDTV, and a legacy VGA port for connecting to older monitors, TVs etc.

Among its other connectivity options, this machine features two standard USB 2.0 ports, as well as two high speed USB 3.0 ports, making it easy to connect all your wired peripherals. Network access is provided both by a standard Ethernet port for wired networking, and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi for wireless networks.

Measuring 19.29 x 13.15 x 3.31 inches, and weighing 7 pounds, this machine is sturdy but not so bulky as to be difficult to carry around with ease. It’s matte black finish is contemporary and stylish, looking equally at home in the boardroom or your living room, and the machine’s full-size keyboard with 10-key numeric keypad makes it easy to get real work done no matter where your travels may take you.

Overall, the Dell Inspiron 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (i15RMT-5124sLV) is a good, mid-range, all round workhorse machine. It isn’t, and doesn’t claim to be, a gaming laptop, and it’s graphics will probably struggle with the demands of modern games, but for the everyday tasks that it was designed for it should perform well. If you’re looking for an inexpensive, general purpose laptop from a big name manufacturer, this could well be the machine for you.
