The Dell Inspiron 15 i15RV-6190BLK 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black Matte with Textured Finish) is an entry level machine designed to handle routine tasks at a budget friendly price.

Surfing the web, video chat, email, updating social status and standard productivity software are all within this machine’s capabilities, but it would be unfair and unreasonable to expect this class of machine to perform well with significantly more demanding tasks. Video editing, for example, would probably pose a challenge for it, and more sophisticated modern games are probably entirely beyond its reach, although it should cope adequately with less resource intensive casual games.

The machine is driven by an Intel Pentium 2117U processor running at 1.8GHz. This is a dual core, Ultra Low Voltage component designed for use in entry level laptops. Although derived from Intel’s Ivy Bridge architecture, many of the features that give that product range its power and performance, notably Turbo Boost and Hyperthreading, are deactivated in this component. Despite these handicaps, however, it should be capable of delivering performance in line with the kind of tasks this machine is designed to undertake.

Those design goals are, no doubt, also responsible for the amount of memory installed in this laptop. It ships with one 4GB DDR3 memory module – considerably less memory than is found on more powerful (and expensive) laptops, but, again, adequate for the expected uses of this machine, and enough for the installed copy of Windows 8 to run reasonably well. Should more memory be required, it is an easy enough task to add a second 4GB module into the slot left free for that purpose. Be aware, however, that 8GB is the maximum amount of RAM that this machine can handle.

Pros :

  • Good Entry Level Laptop
  • Intel Pentium Processor 2117U (2M Cache, 1.8 GHz)
  • 4 GB DDR3 RAM
  • 500 GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • Underpowered For Serious Gaming

For permanent storage of documents, movies, music, pictures and software applications, the machine is fitted with a 500GB hard drive. In keeping with the pattern established by the processor and memory module, this is, as you might expect, a smaller capacity drive than is found in more sophisticated machines. It is, nonetheless, large enough for most purposes, and shouldn’t place any significant constraints on the likely usage of this machine.

The 15.6 inch HD (720p), 1366 x 768 pixel WLED display is driven by an Intel HD Integrated Graphics controller. While wholly inadequate for demanding tasks such as serious gaming (which are, in any event, effectively beyond the capabilities of this machine), the integrated graphics controller is entirely capable of handling the routine tasks for which this machine is likely to be used.

One such task is likely to be watching movies, either played directly from the built-in CD / DVD burner, or streamed from an online service. No matter how good the laptop’s display may be, the will often be times when you want to watch those movies on a bigger screen. Fortunately, this machine makes that easy by providing an HDMI port for connecting to an HDTV or modern monitor.

Other connectivity options include two high speed USB 3.0 ports, for connecting devices that rely on high speed data transfers, such as external hard disk drives, and two standard USB 2.0 ports for less resource-intensive peripherals. Bluetooth is also supported, for connecting mice, headsets, cell phones and other wireless devices to the laptop.

Internet access is facilitated by the usual methods. An Ethernet port is provided for wired networking, and the machine features built-in 802.11 b/g/n WiFi for wireless networking.

The Inspiron 15 i15RV-6190BLK also offers an 8-in-1 Media Card Reader, making it easy to transfer images onto the laptop from cameras and other devices, and a built-in webcam, making it video-chat ready right out of the box. That ease of use is echoed in the machine’s full sized keyboard, which includes a separate 10-key numeric key pad, making the machine ideal for work or homework (or even household budgeting) which requires a significant amount of numeric data entry.

Overall, the Dell Inspiron 15 i15RV-6190BLK 15.6-Inch Laptop is a relatively impressive entry-level machine. It is, of course, no match for its more powerful (and expensive) competitors, but, as a no frills machine designed to handle routine tasks without difficulty, it is perfectly adequate. This machine may well be ideal for use as a second machine, or, perhaps as an introductory machine for someone new to computing. Whatever your intended use for it, however, if you are in the market for a low cost laptop for mundane computing chores, this may well be the machine for you.
