Dell Inspiron i14z-6001sLV 14-Inch Ultrabook Review

Dell Inspiron i14z-6001sLV 14-Inch Ultrabook

The Dell Inspiron i14z-6001sLV 14-Inch Ultrabook is a small, compact yet powerful machine that is ideal for both portable entertainment and getting real work done on the move.

This machine is powered by a third generation Intel Core i5-3317U dual core processor running at 1.7GHz, with the potential to automatically increase that to 2.6GHz as needed thanks to Intel’s Turbo Boost technology. The i5-3317U is an Ultra Low Voltage component, designed to strike a good balance between performance and power consumption in small laptops and Ultrabooks.

With 8GB of DDR3 RAM installed, the Inspiron i14z-6001sLV should have no difficulty in running the pre-installed copy of Windows 8 Home Ediiton (64 Bit), or in multi-tasking your favourite applications.

For permanent storage, it is equipped with a hybrid 500GB hard drive and 32GB Solid State Drive (SSD) solution. The SSD is used as a cache, temporarily storing frequently accessed files for much faster retrieval than would be possible directly from the hard drive. This arrangement offers the best of both worlds – the low cost, high capacity storage offered by a conventional hard drive, coupled with the high speed, but expensive and relatively low capacity storage of a Solid State Drive.

Unlike many other Ultrabooks, this machine is also fitted with an integrated 8x DVD RW drive. While by no means essential, it’s difficult to overstate the sheer convenience of an optical drive for making backups, installing software or simply watching a movie.

Pros :

  • Powerful Processor
  • 8GB RAM
  • Hybrid 500GB Hard Disk / 32GB SSD
  • Graphis Good Enough For Some Gaming
  • Windows 8
  • Small, Easily Portable

Cons :

  • Keyboard Is Not Backlit
  • Only 2 USB Ports

The 14″ widescreen HD (1366 x 768 pixel) LED backlit  display is driven by an AMD Radeon HD 7570M mid-range, DirectX 11 compatible graphics card with 1GB dedicated RAM. Although no match for its more powerful competitors, this component is still capable of handling day-to-day computing requirements with ease, and HD video should pose no problems for it. For gaming, it should cope reasonably well with most games at medium detail settings, but more demanding titles will probably need even lower settings to be playable.

If you’d rather watch movies on a bigger screen, the machine’s built-in HDMI port allows you to hook the laptop up to an HDTV. Other input / output ports include two high speed USB 3.0 ports, one of which features PowerShare technology, allowing you to charge USB devices even when the laptop is alseep or powered off. An Ethernet port provides access to wired networks, while 802.11 b/g/n WiFi offers fast, secure wireless networking.

Wireless peripherals such as mice, headsets and other devices can make use of the machine’s built in Bluetooth, a 3-in-1 card reader makes it easy to transfer your images to the computer from memory cards, and a built-in HD webcam means this machine is video-chat ready right out of the box – just sign in to your favourite chat software (Skype is preinstalled, but you can use anything you like), and you’re good to go.

Measuring 13.66″ (W) x 9.45″ (D) x 0.83″ (H) and weighing just 4.12 lbs, this machine is easily portable, yet surprisingly powerful, meeting and exceeding the common expectations for an Ultrabook-class device. If you’re looking for a capable computer that looks just as good in the boardroom or the living room, and offers enough power to both get the job done and entertain you after hours, The Dell Inspiron i14z-6001sLV 14-Inch Ultrabook may be just the machine for you.
