Dell Inspiron i15R-1633sLV 15.6-Inch Laptop

The Dell Inspiron i15R-1633sLV 15.6-Inch Laptop is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a reasonably powerful, everyday computer from a big name manufacturer at a great price.

Whether you’re surfing the web, video chatting with friends via the built-in HD webcam, helping the kids with their homework or relaxing with a movie, this machine has all the facilities you need to get the job done.

Its 2.4 GHz Intel Core i3-2370M processor may not be top of the range, but it’s no slouch, either, and should be easily able to cope with the tasks this laptop is designed for. That is thanks, in part, to the supplied 6GB of DDR3 RAM – again, more than enough for day-to-day usage, and more, even, than is fitted as standard to many more powerful (and expensive!) laptops.

The 750GB hard drive in this machine is also much larger than those fitted in many other laptops. It is capable of storing an awful lot of movies, music, pictures and other kinds of documents – enough to keep most people going for quite some time without running out of space.

But, if you do need extra storage, or want to backup your data to an external disk drive, you should find the transfer of data to and from an external disk easy – and very quick – thanks to 3 high-speed USB 3.0 ports built in to this laptop. Other connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.0 for connecting wireless mice, headsets and other peripherals, an 8-in-1 card reader for easily transferring data from memory cards and both a wired ethernet port and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi for painlessly connecting to home and work networks – and, of course, to the internet.

Pros :

  • Good everyday laptop
  • Plenty of RAM
  • Large Hard Disk
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit

Cons :

  • Graphics are inadequate for serious gaming

The 15.6″ HD (720p) WLED display with Truelife is great for watching movies, either downloaded from the internet or played directly from the integral DVD +/- R drive. Or, if you prefer, you can use the built-in HDMI port to connect your laptop to an HDTV or monitor and watch your movies on a much bigger screen. There’s also a legacy VGA port, for connecting to older monitors and projectors.

This machine relies on integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 technology to drive the display, and while this is fine for everyday computing, HD videos and casual gaming, it isn’t able to cope with today’s more demanding games. So, if you’re looking for a gaming laptop, you should probably consider other options.

That said, the Inspiron i15R-1633sLV isn’t, and doesn’t pretend to be, a games machine. It’s a general purpose laptop – a role for which it is very well suited.

Unlike many other current models, the i15R-1633sLV ships with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit edition, rather than Windows 8. Whether this is a good or bad thing depends very much on your view of Windows 8. The new software introduces a range of improvements, but it also features a new user interface that is sometimes confusing for seasoned Windows users. If you’re happy with Windows 7, and see no advantage in change, then this will be a bonus for you – if you like to be at the cutting edge of technology, you may want to consider an upgrade.

Regardless of the installed operating system, however, this is a solid everyday laptop, easily able to achieve what it sets out to do, and more. If you’re looking for a big name laptop for routine chores, the Dell Inspiron i15R-1633sLV is well worth considering.
