Dell Inspiron i15RM-12439SLV 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop Review

Dell Inspiron i15RM-12439SLV 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop

The Dell Inspiron i15RM-12439SLV 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (Moon Silver) is a sleek, stylish and powerful device, that promises to deliver both computing performance and cosmetic good looks. Its recently redesigned shell is approximately 17% thinner than earlier generations, making this machine even more easily portable, while retaining the ability to get real work done on the move.

The heart of this laptop is a dual core, 3rd Generation Intel Core i7-3537U processor – an Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) component specifically developed to offer an excellent balance between performance and power consumption in fast laptops. Intel’s Hyperthreading technology enables each of the processor’s two cores to handle up to two threads in parallel, ensuring that they are always working as efficiently as possible. The processor also supports Intel’s Turbo Boost technology, which allows each core to automatically adjust its own speed as needed, up to a maximum of 3.1 GHz. This ensures that the processor delivers maximum performance when it’s needed, and is able to conserve power when handling less demanding tasks.

Memory is, of course, almost as important as the machine’s processor, and, in this case, the i15RM-12439SLV is equipped with 8GB of 1600MHz, DDR3 RAM. This should be more than adequate to allow the pre-installed copy if Windows 8 to show off it’s new features and multi-task your favorite applications with ease. Even so, and despite the ease of upgrading the amount of memory if and when it becomes necessary, it would have been nice to see this machine fitted with a little more RAM. 12 or 16GB would have been ideal, although, in reality, its absence shouldn’t have much, if any, practical impact for many users.

Pros :

  • Powerful General Purpose Laptop
  • 3rd Generation Intel Core i7-3537U processor
  • 8GB DDR3 RAM
  • Large 1TB Hard Disk
  • 15.6 inch HD (720p) Touch screen with Truelife (1366×768)
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • Graphics Underpowered For Serious Gaming

For permanent storage of you documents, music, movies, pictures and, of course, applications, this machine is fitted with a 1TB Hard Disk Drive (HDD). This represents an excellent trade-off between storage capacity (which should be ample for most purposes), cost and performance. Many high-end laptops are now using Solid State Drives in place of convention HDDs, but, despite their impressive speed, they are expensive in large capacities – prohibitively so, in the case of machines like the i15RM-12439SLV, which seek to offer performance at a reasonable price. For machines in this class, it makes much more sense to sacrifice the speed of an SSD in exchange for more usable storage at less cost.

To take advantage of the new, touch-focused features in Windows 8, this machine is equipped with a 15.6 inch, HD (720p) 1366×768 pixel touch screen with Truelife. The screen is driven by integrated Intel HD Graphics hardware, which should be more than capable of handling routine, general purpose computing tasks, HD video and even casual games. It will, however, struggle with more demanding games, so if you’re looking for a dedicated gaming laptop, this may not be the machine for you.

Despite the undeniable advantages of touch screens for some purposes, there are still many tasks – data entry, for example – that are best performed with the traditional mouse and keyboard combination. For those tasks, and for the many, many users who simply prefer to use them, this machine features a full-sized, spill-resistant keyboard with 10-key number pad. The number pad will be a welcome feature for anyone who routinely inputs numeric data (perhaps to a spreadsheet) and the keyboard’s spill-resistance will be welcomed by anyone who has ever made the expensive mistake of spilling coffee on their laptop!

There will probably be times when, useful as the machine’s built-in display may be, you will want or need to use a larger screen – perhaps for watching movies, either streamed from the internet or played from the machine’s built in 8x DVD burner. For those occasions, the machine features an HDMI 1.4 port, making it easy to connect an HDTV or monitor.

Other connectivity options include an Ethernet port for wired networking and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi for access to wireless networks. Bluetooth is also supported, making it easy to connect to wireless peripherals such as mice and headsets.

For more conventional, wired peripherals, the machine features two standard USB 2.0 ports, and two high-speed USB 3.0 ports. Naturally, the sockets are interchangeable, meaning that USB 2.0 devices can be connected to USB 3.0 ports and vice versa, but only USB 3.0 devices connected to a USB 3.0 port will be able to perform at full USB 3.0 speeds. An 8-in-1 media card reader and a combined headphone and microphone socket round off the array of input / output ports.

Overall, the Dell Inspiron i15RM-12439SLV 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop offers all the features you would expect from a reasonably powerful, general purpose laptop. It should be more than capable of meeting most users’ needs, and even exceeding them in many cases. It is not, and does not claim to be, a gaming machine, but as a workhorse machine capable of getting real work done on the move, it should not disappoint. If you’re in the market for a relatively powerful, cost-efficient laptop that can easily cope with everyday computing needs (surfing the net, updating social status, email, productivity software etc are all well with its capabilities) and, incidentally, also looks great, then this could well be the machine you’ve been looking for.
