Dell Venue 7 16 GB Tablet (Android) Review

Dell Venue 7 16 GB Tablet (Android)

The Dell Venue 7 16 GB Tablet (Android) is an inexpensive, mid-range tablet from a big brand manufacturer that manages to combine simplicity and usability with reasonable features and performance. Of course, in this price range, there will always be some compromises, but, for many people, the Venue 7 is more than good enough for their needs.

It is built around an Intel Atom Z2560 processor. This System on a Chip (SoC) design features a dual core Atom processor that supports Hyperthreading and TurboBoost technologies, making each core capable of handle two threads in parallel, and automatically adjusting its speed from the base speed of 933MHz up to a maximum of 1.6 GHz as needed. It’s performance and power consumption are optimized for use in mid-range smartphones and tablets.

The Venue 7 (part number: Ven7-1666BLK) features 2 GB of DDR2 memory, which should be more than enough to allow the installed copy of Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean to perform well. Unlike many manufacturers, Dell has chosen to install a virtually unmodified, so called “stock” copy of Android on this tablet. This means that you can be sure of experiencing Android as it was designed to be, unencumbered by tweaks and modifications imposed by device manufacturers.

The tablet’s 7 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel, capacitive multi-touch  touchscreen is bright and responsive. An ambient light sensor automatically adjusts brightness to suit your surroundings, although, of course, this can be overridden if necessary. Although it is not the highest resolution screen to be found on an Android device, it should still be easily capable of presenting clear, sharp HD video, which, is perhaps, the best that you can realistically expect from a device in this price range. Certainly, for many people, with fairly routine needs from a tablet, it will be more than good enough.

Pros :

  • Intel Atom Z2560 Processor 1.6 GHz
  • 16 GB Flash Memory
  • 2 GB RAM Memory
  • 7-Inch Display
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

Cons :

  • Battery life is ok, but not brilliant

Internal storage is an acceptable 16 GB – again, by no means the most storage capacity available in an Android tablet, but adequate for many purposes. Fortunately, the device also offers a Micro-SD card reader capable of handling cards up to at least 32 GB. This should go some way towards alleviating the storage situation for those users who need more capacity than the device’s internal storage can provide.

As you would expect from a purely mobile device, the Venue 7 supports wireless networking, in the form of 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, making it easy to get online anywhere there’s a WiFi hotspot. Bluetooth 4.0 is also provided, for easy transfer of files to and from the device. Furthermore, GPS is available in this device, along with location-based services, making it a useful tool for travelling.

The tablet features both front and rear facing cameras. The rear facing camera is 3 MP, while the front facing camera offers VGA resolution. With those resolutions, neither camera is going to replace your camera or smartphone as your favorite picture-taking device, but they’re good enough to get the job done – ideal for Skype or other video chat, for example, without needing to boot up your laptop or desktop computer.

This tablet’s battery life is, reportedly, not particularly impressive in real-life use, although the manufacturer claims a battery life of up to 10 hours. However, it isn’t dire, either, and, as with other aspects of this relatively inexpensive tablet, will probably be more than good enough for many users.

Measuring 7.60 x 4.65 x 0.38 inches and weighing 11 ounces, this is an ideal device to carry around with you. Catch up with your reading on your commute, watch a movie or simply check your email from the comfort of your armchair – it should be easily capable of these tasks and a great deal more.

Overall, the Dell Venue 7 16 GB Tablet (Android) is an excellent choice if you’re looking for an inexpensive mid-range tablet. Although not as impressive as some more powerful (and expensive) alternatives, it has far more to offer than many bargain-basement options at a very reasonable price. For many people, it will do everything they ask of a tablet, and probably considerably more – this device should definitely be on your shortlist.
