Lenovo G585 15.6-Inch Laptop Review

HP Pavilion g6-2210us 15.6-Inch Laptop

The Lenovo G585 15.6-Inch Laptop is an affordable machine designed to offer day-to-day computing on a budget.

Built around an AMD 1.3 GHz Dual-Core E-300 CPU with integrated Radeon HD 6310 graphics, supported by 4GB of RAM and a 320 GB hard drive, this machine makes an ideal laptop for people who do not need the incredible computing power (and expense!) of high-end models.

It should cope easily with everyday tasks like surfing the web, helping the kids with their homework, video-chatting with friends and family or keeping track of the family budget. The 320GB hard drive is big enough to store an awful lot of documents, pictures, music and, of course, videos, so you don’t need to worry about running out of space any time soon.

The integrated Radeon HD 6310 graphics and 15.6 inch LED backlit display are more than capable of handling HD video. Together with the crisp, clear surround sound of the Dolby Advanced Audio, this makes the Lenovo G585 ideal for watching movies on the move, either streamed from the internet or played on the machine’s own DVD drive. Or, if you prefer, you can hook up an HDTV to the laptop’s HDMI port and watch them on a big screen instead.

Other ports include a VGA port for connecting to an older-style monitor or projector, two high-speed USB 3.0 ports, one legacy USB 2.0 port, a 2-in-1 card reader (SD and MMC cards) for easily transferring data from memory cards, and both an RJ45 wired ethernet port and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi for connecting to the internet.

There is also a 720p HD webcam built-in to this laptop, making it video-chat ready right out of the box – just sign in to your favourite chat software, connect to the internet and you’re ready to go.

Pros :

  • Great budget laptop for everyday chores
  • Large Hard Disk
  • Some good bundled software
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • Underpowered for serious gaming

The G585 ships with Windows 8, the latest version of Microsoft’s world-leading operating system, and a wealth of other software, too. As is often the case, some of the bundled software will be of little interest to many users, but there are also some titles that promise to be genuinely useful.

Skype, for example, is almost universally used for video chat, and so it makes sense to bundle it with the machine. Similarly, Amazon’s Kindle software is used by many, many people and, again, it makes sense to save the user time and effort by bundling it with the computer. PowerDVD, too, is commonly used for viewing DVD movies, and there is good chance that users will already be familiar with it.

The machine  measures 14.8″ (W) x 9.65″ (D)  x 1.35″ (H), and weighs 5.73 lbs including the 6-cell, 2200mAh Li-Cylinder battery (which has a battery life up to 5 hours between charges). That’s small and light enough to easily carry around with you, yet big and robust enough to support a full-sized keyboard, complete with numeric keypad – a very useful addition if you intend to be keying in a lot of numeric data!

Overall, this is an excellent budget laptop, suited for everyday tasks. If you want to play today’s most demanding games, this is definitely not the machine for you, and, as is always the case, the low price is bound to mean some compromises in performance and construction. Nonetheless, it is more than powerful enough for routine activities like surfing the web, video chat and homework assignments – if that’s the kind of uses you have in mind, the Lenovo G585 is well worth considering.
