Lenovo IdeaPad G510s 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop Review

Lenovo IdeaPad G510s 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop

The Lenovo IdeaPad G510s 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (model number 59406579) is a mid-range machine that should be easily capable of handling everyday computing tasks and still have enough processing power in reserve for more demanding applications, too.

At its heart lies an Intel Core i5-4200M processor. This is a dual-core CPU based on Intel’s Haswell architecture, specifically designed to provide a good balance between energy efficiency and processing performance in mid-range laptops. The processor supports Intel’s Turbo Boost technology, meaning that each of the two cores can automatically adjust its own speed, from the base speed of 2.5 GHz, up to a maximum of 3.1 GHz, depending on the needs of the current software application. Hyper-Threading is also supported, which means that each core can handle up to two threads in parallel, allowing for more efficient usage of the CPU’s resources.

The processor is supported by 6 GB of DDR3 memory. This should be more than enough to allow the supplied copy of Windows 8.1 to perform well, enabling it to multitask your favorite applications with ease.

For permanent storage of your pictures, music, movies and documents, the machine is fitted with a 1024 GB (1 TB) Hard Disk Drive (HDD). Again, this should provide more than enough storage capacity for most users, but, should more storage space eventually be required, it is an easy matter to connect an external HDD to one of the machine’s USB ports.

Pros :

  • Good mid-range workhorse machine
  • Intel Core i5-4200M dual-core processor
  • 6 GB DDR3 memory
  • 1024 GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
  • 15.6-Inch Touchscreen
  • Windows 8.1

Cons :

  • Graphics may be underpowered for serious gaming

On the subject of disk drives, it’s good to note that this laptop includes a built-in DVD-RW. Although optical drives are arguably less important than they once were, and many manufacturers are omitting them from some models to save space, weight and / or money, they remain undeniably useful and the sheer convenience of having one built into a laptop is difficult to overstate.

The machine features a 15.6-inch, 1366×768 pixel, 10-point multi-touch touchscreen, making it ideal for use with the largely touch-driven interface of Windows 8.1. The screen is driven by integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600, which should be easily capable of dealing with the needs of most day-to-day software, but will probably struggle with demanding games. Of course, this is not, and does not claim to be, a gaming laptop, and it is unfair to expect it to match the capabilities of much more powerful – and expensive! – machines. This machine should cope perfectly well with the types of application that it was designed for, including casual gaming and HD video, but if you’re looking for a machine to handle high-end games, this may not be the machine for you.

As you would expect from a modern laptop, the machine features the usual array of input / output ports. An HDMI port is provided for connecting to an HDTV or modern monitor, while a legacy VGA port ensures that you should have no difficulty in connecting to older monitors, TVs, projectors etc.

One standard USB 2.0 port and two high-speed USB 3.0 ports ensure that there should be no difficulties in connecting wired peripherals to this machine, which a media card reader makes it easy to transfer images onto the laptop from your camera or smartphone.

Users are able to choose between wired and wireless networking. For those who want, or need, to use conventional wired networks, the machine features a standard Ethernet port, while 802.11 b/g/n WiFi is built-in for those who prefer their networking to be wireless.

Measuring 15 x 1.06 x 10.40 inches, and weighing just 5.9 pounds, this machine is sturdy yet small and lightweight enough to remain easily portable. And, with a reported battery life of up to 5 hours, you will be sure to get your work done wherever you choose to take it!

Overall, the Lenovo IdeaPad G510s 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (Black) is a powerful, yet inexpensive, mid-range laptop that should be capable of handling most day-to-day computing needs with ease. It isn’t, and doesn’t pretend to be, a gaming laptop, but as a general purpose workhorse it should be perfectly adequate. If you’re looking for an inexpensive all-rounder, this could well be the machine for you.
