Lenovo S405 14.0-Inch Laptop (Silver Grey) Review

Lenovo S405 14.0-Inch Laptop (Silver Grey)

The Lenovo IdeaPad S405 14.0-Inch Laptop is a smooth, sleek and above all affordable machine that combines portability and performance with a stylish exterior.

Powered by a dual core AMD A6-4455M processor, supported by 4GB DDR3 RAM, a 500GB hard drive and a 14.0 inch display driven by AMD Radeon HD 7500G Integrated Graphics, this is a surprisingly versatile machine for its price range.

Clearly, it is not – and is not intended to be – a high specification, high performance device such as might appeal to gamers or power users on the move, but it is still more than capable of handling most routine computing tasks.

An ergonomic keyboard design, and multi-touch touchpad enable you to take full advantage of the touch-centric features built in to the pre-installed copy of Windows 8. Office and productivity software, surfing the web, email, video chat via the built-in 720p HD webcam and many other everyday computing chores are well within its reach, although the AMD A6-4455M processor may struggle if you try to do too many of them at once.

The Radeon HD 7500G Integrated Graphics are, again, in keeping with the needs and expected uses of an everyday laptop. It will cope well with day-to-day tasks, will handle HD video with ease and should have no difficulty with casual gaming. More challenging games are, however, beyond its abilities.

Pros :

  • Small, easily portable
  • Large Hard Disk
  • Windows 8
  • Ideal for everyday tasks on a budget

Cons :

  • Underpowered for serious gaming
  • No optical drive

The 500GB hard drive should provide plenty of storage for most needs, although at least some of that capacity is given over to a recovery partition that allows the machine to be reset to factory settings in the event of problems. Even so, there should be more than enough space to store all of your documents, pictures and music.

Network connectivity is provided by an Ethernet port for wired networking, and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi for wireless network connections. Other input / output ports include an HDMI port for connecting to a modern monitor or HDTV, two standard USB 2.0 ports, one high-speed USB 3.0 port, a headphones jack and a multi-function card reader. There is no optical CD/DCD fitted to this machine as a result of it’s small size, and, while that needn’t be a problem, it is something to be aware of; if you think you may need a DVD drive, you may want to consider purchasing an external USB unit.

Measuring 13.25 x 0.50 x 0.83 (LxWxH) inches, weighing just 4 pounds and with a battery life of up to 5 hours, this laptop is easily portable, yet powerful enough to do real work on the move. If you are looking for an everyday workhorse laptop to handle routine tasks on a budget, this machine is well worth considering.
