The Samsung ATIV Book 6 15.6-Inch Full HD Touchscreen Laptop is a powerful machine, well suited for the rigours of getting real work done on the move.
Despite measuring just 14.75 x 0.97 x 9.84 inches and weighing a mere 5.3 pounds, its stylish and durable Mineral Ash Black aluminum case manages to contain an impressively capable yet easily portable computer.
At its heart is a fast, 2.4GHz Intel Core i7 3635QM processor – a third generation, quad core component designed to offer an excellent balance between performance and power consumption in higher-end laptops. Intel’s Turbo Boost technology enables this processor to automatically adjust its own speed to best suit its workload, ensuring that demanding applications get the resources they need to run well. The processor also supports Hyperthreading, which improves efficiency by allowing each of the four cores to handle up to two threads simultaneously.
The machine is equipped with 8GB of DDR3 RAM, which should be more than adequate for most purposes. However, in view of the manufacturer’s emphasis on video editing and gaming as ideal uses for this laptop, a little more memory would have been nice. Even so, the supplied copy of Windows 8 should have no difficulty in multi-tasking your applications and switching between them on demand.
For permanent storage of documents, music, pictures and video, the ATIV Book 6 is fitted with a 1TG hard drive. Again, this should more than adequate for the needs of most users, although a hybrid Solid State Drive (SSD) / Hard Drive solution, giving both the speed of an SSD and affordable storage capacity of a hard disk, might have been a worthwhile change. Regardless of this speculation, however, the supplied 1TB drive should do the job perfectly well.
- Powerful, easily portable touch screen Ultrabook
- Fast Intel Core i7 3635QM Procesor
- 8GB RAM
- Large 1TB hard disk
- AMD Radeon HD 8770M Graphics
- Windows 8
- No CD / DVD drive
The 15.6-Inch, LED backlit, full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) touch screen makes it easy to take full advantage of the touch-friendly features of Windows 8, although, if you prefer, you can control the machine with a mouse and keyboard just as you always have. The display is driven by a combination of low-power, integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 hardware for routine tasks, and a discrete AMD Radeon HD 8770M graphics card with up to 1 GB of memory for more demanding applications. Seamless, automatic switching between the two ensures that you’re always using the most appropriate, battery-friendly graphics technology for the job in hand.
Of course, there will be times – perhaps when watching a movie – when you may want to connect the machine to a much larger external display. The ATIV Book 6 makes this possible in two ways – an HDMI port for connecting to modern monitors and HDTVs, and a VGA port for connecting to old-style monitors and projectors, etc.
Network connectivity is provided by both a Gigabit Ethernet port for wired networking, and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi for wireless networks, so you can choose the option that best suits your current situation. Staying with wireless connections, the machine offers Bluetooth 4.0 for connecting a range of devices such as mice, headsets and cellphones. For more conventional, wired peripherals, the machine sports one high-speed USB 3.0 port and two standard USB 2.0 ports. There is also a built-in 720p webcam, making this machine video-chat capable right out of the box, and a 3-in-1 card reader to ease the process of transferring images from cameras etc. A combined headphone and microphone socket rounds off the collection of input / output ports on this device.
Like many Ultrabook-class machines, the ATIV Book 6 doesn’t have a CD / DVD drive. This shouldn’t be a major concern, as this type of machine is designed to provide powerful, portable computing and some things are obviously going to be sacrificed to achieve that objective. It is, however, something to keep in mind, as, if you think you might need an optical drive, you will need to purchase an external USB unit.
On the other hand, this machine does have a full-sized, backlit keyboard, with separate numeric keypad. Both the backlight and keypad may initially seem to be less than essential features, but if you regularly use the machine in less than ideal lighting conditions – as is virtually inevitable if you use it on the road – to input numeric data, you will quickly come to appreciate them both.
Overall, the Samsung ATIV Book 6 15.6-Inch Full HD Touchscreen Laptop is a powerful, easily portable Ultrabook, ideal for carrying out less than trivial computing tasks on the go. It is billed as being suitable for video editing, and should be able to manage that adequately, although a little more memory wouldn’t hurt. With a quoted battery life of up to 8 hours, you should certainly be able to get quite a bit of work done away from a power outlet. If you’re in the market for a stylish, powerful and easily portable touchscreen laptop, this may be just the machine you’ve been looking for.
