Samsung Series 9 NP900X4C-A06US 15-Inch Premium Ultrabook Review

HP Pavilion g6-2210us 15.6-Inch Laptop

The Samsung Series 9 NP900X4C-A06US 15-Inch Premium Ultrabook is, as its name suggests, very much a premium ultabook. With stylish looks, durable yet lightweight aluminium unibody design and a 15″ HD+ SuperBright display, this device looks – and is – equally at home in the boardroom or the living room.

Powered by a third generation 1.7 GHz Intel Core i5-3317U dual-core, ultra-low voltage processor, and supported by 8GB DDR3 RAM and a 128GB SSD, this machine should be easily capable of running the supplied Windows 8 software without difficulty as it churns through your workload.

While the 8GB of preinstalled RAM should be more than enough for most purposes, it’s worth noting that this is, apparently, the machine’s maximum capacity – if you need more, or think that you might, this may not be the machine for you, despite its charms.

Similarly, the 128GB SSD, although much, much faster than an old-style hard drive, is not particularly large. Of course, large is a relative term – taken in isolation, 128GB is quite a lot of data, but is a mere fraction of the capacity available on a large conventional hard drive. Looking on the bright side, however, the SSD should be upgradable, should you find you need more space in the future.

The integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 that power the display is in much the same league – more than capable of handling day-to-day computing tasks, easily able to handle HD video, and not too far out of its depth with relatively undemanding games. More demanding games, however, are beyond its reach.

Pros :

  • Stylish, sturdy build
  • Good premium workhorse machine
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • Graphics inadequate for serious gaming
  • Small SSD
  • Maximum RAM already fitted

That said, this is not, and does not pretend to be, a gaming laptop. It is a well built, attractive and well equipped workhorse that can also double as an entertainment device, and in that capacity it has a lot to offer.

WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0, an ethernet port dongle, two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port, a multi-format memory card slot (compatible with SD, SDHC, SDXC, and MMC media), headphone and mic ports and a micro HDMI port for connecting to a compatible HDTV make this machine very easy to hook up to your other devices and, of course, to connect to the internet.

Onboard speakers and built-in 1.3 megapixel HD webcam take care of sound output and video input, making this machine video-chat ready right out of the box. There is no VGA port built in to the laptop itself, but if you need to connect it to old-style monitor or projector, a VGA connector is available as an optional dongle. Nor, as with most ultrabooks, is there a CD / DVD drive built in – if you’re going to need one, you’ll have to connect one to the machine via a USB cable.

To recap, the Samsung Series 9 NP900X4C-A06US 15-Inch Premium Ultrabook is a fine example of an upper-mid-range workhorse machine, designed to look good and perform with ease the tasks that most people use their computers for most of the time. It isn’t a games machine, and doesn’t claim to be one. The SSD could be bigger, but it’s probably big enough for the purpose – it won’t store a lot of movies, but it’s plenty big enough for your family photos and an awful lot of letters and spreadsheets.

If you’re looking for a lightweight, stylish workhorse with good battery life, this machine may well be right for you.
