Sony VAIO E14 Series SVE14122CXW 14-Inch Laptop (White) Review

Sony VAIO E14 Series SVE14122CXW 14-Inch Laptop (White)

The Sony VAIO E14 Series SVE14122CXW 14-Inch Laptop is a beautifully designed machine that comes in three different case colors – white, pink or black, each with a backlit keyboard and large clickable touchpad.

Inside each stylishly curved case is a computer that is easily able to cope with the demands of day to day computing, whether surfing the web, video-chatting with friends via the built-in HD webcam or watching a movie.

Powered by a third generation Intel Core i3-3110M processor running 2.5GHx, and equipped with 4GB of DDR3 RAM (expandable to 8GB) and a 500GB hard drive, this machine should have no difficulty in running the supplied copy of Windows 8, or in quickly switching between your own applications. To get you started, Sony provide a suite of creative applications under the name of Sony Imagination Studio VAIO Edition. The suite includes Vegas, ACID, Sound Forge, and DVD Architect software – idea for anyone who wants to get started making movies and music!

The 14-inch LED backlit display is driven by Intel HD Graphics 4000, an integrated graphics solution that is commonly found on budget and mid-range laptops. It is easily capable of handling everyday tasks, casual gaming and HD video, but, despite being compatible with DirectX 11.1, it will struggle with more demanding games.

This laptop has the usual range of connectivity options – Gigabit ethernet for wired networking, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi for wireless networking and Bluetooth for connecting wireless mice, headsets and other devices.

Pros :

  • Stylish machine for everyday computing
  • Plenty of RAM
  • Large Hard Disk
  • Backlit keyboard
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • Underpowered for serious gaming

Three USB 2.0 ports and one high-speed USB 3.0 port make it easy to connect peripherals. The USB 3.0 port has the added advantage of being able to charge your USB devices – MP3 players and phones, for example – even when the laptop is shut down and not plugged in.

A VGA port means you can connect to older monitors and projectors, and an HDMI port allows you to connect the laptop to a modern monitor or HDTV for watching movies or viewing pictures etc. on a large screen. There is also a built-in 2-in-1 card reader for transferring images to the laptop from your memory cards.

Built-in stereo speakers with xLOUD and Clear Phase Technology mean you can enjoy music – either downloaed from the internet or played on the integrated 8x multi-format CD / DVD drive – in the way that it was meant to be enjoyed, either at home or on the move. And, for those times when you need to listen in private, this machine has the usual microphone and headphone jacks, too.

Overall, this is a stylishly designed laptop that adds function to beauty. It isn’t a top of the range powerhouse, but then it doesn’t pretend to be, and doesn’t need to be to fulfil its intended purpose. If you’re in the market for a great looking laptop to handle those everyday computing needs – surfing the web, video chat etc. – then this might just be the machine you’ve been looking for.
