Toshiba Satellite S875-S7370 17.3-Inch Laptop

The Toshiba Satellite S875-S7370 17.3-Inch Laptop is an impressive piece of equipment from a company with a long and generally distinguished history in the field of mobile computing.

This model continues that tradition, combining processing power, portability and stylish good looks to create a premium product that has a lot to offer.

At its heart lies a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7-3630QM ultra-low voltage, quad-core processor, which, thanks to Turbo Boost Technology, is capable of running at 3.4 GHz when necessary. This fast, laptop-specific, energy-efficient processor is teamed up with 8GB of DDR3 RAM (expandable to 16GB) and a 750 GB hard drive to form the foundation of a system that should cope easily with most tasks.

The integrated Intel HD graphics are capable of sharing up to 1696 MB of system memory. They are easily able to handle HD video, casual gaming and the demands of everyday computing. But, despite support for Microsoft DirectX 11, the are not really suitable for playing today’s most demanding games.

That said, this isn’t a gaming laptop – it’s a powerful workhorse for professionals on the move, and a viable desktop alternative for all power uses, mobile or not. In keeping with that role, it offers the usual array of ports and connectivity options.

Bluetooth 4.0 allows you to connect wireless mice, keyboards, headsets and other devices directly to the laptop without needing a USB Bluetooth adapter. There is one legacy USB 2.0 port, and two high-speed USB 3.0 ports, one of which offers Sleep and Charge capabilities, so you can charge your wireless devices from the port without having the laptop switched on.

Pros :

  • Powerful, stylish laptop
  • Plenty of RAM
  • Large Hard Disk
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • Graphics are underpowered for serious gaming

Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi ensure that you should have no difficulty in connecting this machine to the internet, while a multi-format card reader makes it easy to transfer data to the laptop from a wide range of memory cards.

The 17.3-inch TruBrite LED-backlit display is great for both work and entertainment, with its 1600 x 900 resolution for native HD 720p viewing. Alternatively, you can connect the laptop to an HDTV or monitor via the HDMI port, and watch your movies on a bigger screen. You can also connect to an older-style monitor or projector via the machine’s VGA port.

Unlike many Ultrabooks, this premium laptop includes an optical CD / DVD drive, enabling you install software from disk, burn your own data to disk and, of course, play CDs and DVDs on the move. For that purpose, and for use when in a video chat using the built-in webcam, you might find the combined headphone and microphone port useful, too.

As with most new laptops, this machine ships with Windows 8, the latest version of Microsoft’s world-leading software. The Satellite S875-S7370 features an enhanced, multi-touch capable Touchpad, intended to work well with the touch features built in to the new look Windows. Although this isn’t essential to make use of Windows 8, it is a welcome addition that greatly simplifies the transition to the reimagined (and initially slightly confusing) look of Windows 8.

Tucked into a stylish, Ice Blue Brushed Aluminum case that measures 10.60 (L) x 16.30 (W) x 1.30 (H) inches and weighs a little over 6 pounds, the Toshiba Satellite S875-S7370 17.3-Inch Laptop is both powerful and easily portable. It won’t cope too well with today’s most demanding games, but it should be more than equal to most other tasks. If you’re a mobile professional or power user looking for your next laptop, this machine could well be it.
