Toshiba Satellite S875-S7376 17.3-Inch Laptop Review

HP Pavilion g6-2210us 15.6-Inch Laptop

The Toshiba Satellite S875-S7376 17.3-Inch Laptop represents an excellent example of what a premium laptop should be.

From the purely cosmetic appearance of the Ice Blue Brushed Aluminum case, to the professional-grade keyboard and the 17.3-inch, 1600 x 900, TruBrite, LED-backlit native HD 720p display, this machine creates an  immediate impression of good performance and high quality.

And, for once, appearances are not deceptive. The choice of a fast, 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7-3630QM ultra-low voltage, quad-core processor (3.4 GHz with Turbo Boost Technology) to drive this laptop clearly indicates that high-end performance was designed in from the beginning, and that objective has carried over into the rest of the specification.

The 8GB of DDR3 RAM (expandable to 16GB) is more than enough to allow the processor to flex its muscles while multi-tasking your applications, and the capacious 1000GB (1TB) hard drive will take even the most dedicated file-hoarder quite some time to fill.

AMD Radeon HD 7670M discrete graphics with 1 GB of DDR3 video RAM drive the display. This is a mid-range graphics solution, far superior to the integrated graphics often found on even quite powerful laptops. It is, of course, compatible with Microsoft’s DirectX 11, but even so, it may struggle to cope with the most demanding games at anything above medium detail settings. That said, it is capable of handling other, less punishing games at ultra detail level, so, if you intend to play games on this laptop, it might be worth checking whether – and how well – your personal favourites will run.

High-end games aside, the HD 7670M more than meets the needs of most applications. It is easily capable of processing HD video, which you can either watch on the laptop’s excellent 17.3 inch display, or on a much bigger screen connected to the laptop’s HDMI port. Unlike many laptops, this machine features a combine Blue Ray reader and CD / DVD burner, so you can watch films from you disc collections as well as downloading them from the internet.

Pros :

  • Powerful, stylish laptop
  • Pleny of RAM
  • Large Hard Disk
  • Mid-range graphics
  • Blue Ray drive
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • May struggle with demanding games above medium detail

Other ports and connectivity options include a VGA port for connecting to older monitors or projectors, one USB 2.0 port, two high-speed USB 3.0 ports (one of which features Sleep and Charge capabilities for charging mobile devices while the laptop is switched off), a multi-format memory card reader and a combined headphone and microphone port.

Wireless mice and other devices can be connected via the laptop’s built-in Bluetooth 4.0, while access to home and business networks (and the internet) is provided via a wired Gigabit Ethernet port and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi.

Once you’re connected to the internet, you’ll probably want to chat with your friends and family. Conveniently, video chat is catered for right out of the box with the built-in HD webcam – simply sign in to your favourite chat software and you’re good to go!

Like most new computers, this machine ships with Windows 8, the latest version of Microsoft’s world-famous operating system. To take best advantage of the touch features in this updated version of Windows, the S875-S7376 uses an enhance, multi-touch aware Touchpad that makes learning and using Windows 8 a breeze.

All of this impressive technology is squeezed into a case that measures 16.3 x 10.6 x 1.3 inches (WxDxH) and weighs just 6.3 pounds.

In summary, if you’re in the market for a premium laptop that looks great and packs a considerable processing punch, you need to be at least considering the Toshiba Satellite S875-S7376.
