Toshiba Satellite S955-S5376 15.6-Inch Laptop Review

Toshiba Satellite S955-S5376 15.6-Inch Laptop (Ice Blue Brushed Aluminum)

The Toshiba Satellite S955-S5376 15.6-Inch Laptop is a powerful, general-purpose workhorse machine designed to cope well with a wide range of tasks from everyday web surfing, through entertainment to homework and routine business tasks.

Its slimline, Ice Blue, Brushed Aluminum case measures just 0.30 (L) x 14.94 (W) x 0.97 (H) inches and weighs around 5 lbs, making the machine easily portable as well as impressively powerful.

At its heart lies a 1.7 GHz (2.6 GHz with Turbo Boost Technology) Intel Core i5-3317U ultra-low voltage, dual-core processor. This CPU is designed with small laptops and Ultrabooks in mind, balancing low power consumption with the flexibility of Turbo Boost to automatically adjust its own speed as needed. Along with Hyperthreading – the ability for each of the processor’s two cores to handle up to two threads simultaneously – this makes the i5-3317U an excellent choice for power users on the move.

With 8GB of DDR3 RAM installed (expandable to 16GB), the supplied copy of Windows 8 should work well, showing of its new new touch-centric interface and multitasking even your most demanding applications with relative ease.

The 750GB hard drive fitted to this machine should provide plenty of storage space for your documents, pictures, music and movies. Although there are larger drives on the market and installed in other, competing laptops, 750GB is a reasonable choice for a machine of this class and price point. The vast majority of users will use only a fraction of its capacity, and those who need more space will find it easy to connect an external hard disk to one of the machine’s two high-speed USB 3.0 ports.

One of those USB 3.0 ports, one also supports Toshiba’s Sleep and Charge technology. This allows you to charge your cellphone, MP3 player or other device from the port, even when the laptop is asleep or switched off.

Pros :

  • Poweful, Easily Portable Workhorse Laptop
  • PLenty of RAM
  • Large Hard Disk
  • Windows 8

Cons :

  • Graphics Are Inadequate for Serious Gaming

Other input / output ports available on this machine include one standard USB 2.0 port, microphone in / headphone out jacks and a multi format memory card reader for easily transferring images from your camera to the computer. Wired network connectivity is provided by a standard Ethernet port, while wireless networking is catered for by 802.11 b/g/n WiFi.

The 15.6-inch TruBrite, HD, LED-backlit display is driven by integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 technology. As with other elements of this machine’s spec, the integrated graphics is more than capable of handling most day-to-day computing requirements. It will have no difficulty with productivity applications and routine web surfing and social media tasks, it will handle HD video with ease and shouldn’t struggle with casual gaming.

Despite being compatible with Microsoft’s DirectX 11.1, however, more demanding games are beyond its capabilities. That said, this isn’t a gaming laptop, nor does it claim to be one. It is a powerful mid-range workhorse designed for work and entertainment on the move, and, for those purposes, the Intel HD Graphics 4000 is perfectly adequate.

A legacy VGA port is provided for hooking the machine up to an older-style monitor or projector, and an HDMI port makes it easy to connect to an HDTV or monitor – very useful if you prefer to watch movies (either streamed from the internet or played directly on the built in DVD RW drive) or a screen bigger than the laptop’s own 15.6 inch display.

Overall, this is a capable, easily portable and good-looking machine that should easily meet the needs of professionals and power users on the go. If that sounds like the kind of machine you have in mind, the Toshiba Satellite S955-S5376 15.6-Inch Laptop (Ice Blue Brushed Aluminum) might well be just what you’ve been looking for.
